He didn't ask you what kind of processor you had... In order to answer your question, I'm going to assume that you have a socket 775 processor and that your willing to spend in the relm of $300 for your new processor, since you havent provided much information. In that case, if you are wanting to stick with your current motherboard then I would reccomend that you get around a 3.2GHz Pentium 4 640. That is the best Intel solution for gaming in the $300 price range. If you do more multitasking than gaming, I would recommend you go with one of the new dual-core Pentium D's, like the Pentium D 830 3.0GHz. If your willing to switch motherboards, let me know and I'll provide you with some links for a nice AMD based system. Also, let me know your price range and some more system specs if you can.

Depends on what kind of money your willing to spend, but I'd go with a AMD XP 3000

That's a good processor to go with if you're on a budget, but that would involve him replacing his motherboard also. And I could be wrong, but I think a 2.8GHz P4 with 800MHz FSB might outperform an XP 3000.

Download CPU-Z and tell us what it says for Codename and Package (all on the first screen when it loads up). that way we can be sure to give you more helpful advice. And i think a 2.8C Pentium 4 does out perform a XP 3000+, and i think the 3.06 Pentium 4 beats a XP 3200+.

That would be more than enough, and yes it will up to a 7800GTX. But it would be alot cheaper to upgrade your current system, what video card do you have now?
