I have a socket 478 Intel Pentium 4 2.6ghz HT cpu and am looking to upgrade. I looked on tigerdirect and there is a intel core duo at 2ghz. is it worth $319 to upgrade? is it much faster? Thanks in advanced

Yes its worth it. The new Intel Core 2 Duo will crush any AMD on the market today.

Yes Indeed it is! But as Vikke said you will need a new motherboard, Ram and video card, If you do get it. I myself am doing the same thing as you, I'm going to upgrade my P4 to a core 2.

No! Core 2's are soccet 775 so you will need a soccet 775 motherboard that is core 2 ready. You'll need DDR2 ram and most likely a pci experss video card.

Not to mention the fact that your motherboard chipset needs to support Core 2 Duo CPUs, i.e it must be one of the following:

Intel: 865PE, 945P/PL/G, 955X, 975X, P/G/Q965, Q963, 946GZ/PL ATI Radeon Xpress: 200, RD600 and RS600 nVidia: nForce 4 SLI Intel Edition, nForce 570/590 Intel Edition and nForce 680i. VIA: PT880/PT880 Ultra, PT890, PM880 and PM890. SiS: SiS662

Just because it uses the same socket, doesn't mean that it's automatically compatible with your motherboard.
