im thinking of asking my dad for some upgrades this christmas. im planning on asking him for an athlon x2 4200 processor with a new mobo to go with. the question is, which socket type is the more newer one or more recent one? the socket AM2 or the socket 939. and can you guys also tell me which one gives you better performance.
AM2 is the newer one. With the current generation of processors in terms of performance I don't think it makes much difference. However, AM2 does require DDR2 memory which means chances are you'll need to buy that as well as the CPU and motherboard. On the flip side, 939 will leave you with a poor upgrade path in the future.
Damn, I guess I'll just have to stick with the 939 then. Thanks
Theres nothing wrong with 939 yet other than the limited upgradability in the future.
