I have just been given a spare license for windows server 2003 from my works, so i can do more work from home. Does anyone know if I can use this as my main operating system, i.e will games and media apps work on it properly or will I run into big problems?

Pentium4 3Ghz 1.5 Gb Ram Radeon 9250 Graphics.

Cheers.

Windows 2003 is not designed for home use. It's a very solid OS, but it lacks a lot of features that games and multimedia require. Although you can make it work, yes you will run into big problems.

It's a server OS, it was never designed to run everyday home computing applications. It will work, but you'll likely run into stumbling blocks along the way. Anyway, a bit of Googling reveals a basic guide on how to transform it into a home workstation. Click.

If you are willing to do a reformat, installing Server first and then XP after (assuming you use XP) will automatically give you a nice XP-themed operating system select screen on boot up. However, as it's been said, Server isn't designed for games, but rather prolonged use and stability.

no, XP is diffrent. XP is windows NT 5.1, codename whistler. Windows 2003 is NT 5.2, codename blackcomb. MS's original plans were to have a home verson of Blackcomb

Nope. Blackcomb was the pre-production name for Windows Vienna, which (assuming MS stick to their mantra of adapting NT kernels for each new version of Windows) will be NT 6.2, otherwise if they do what they've been promising for the last few years and write a new kernel from scratch it's more likely to be NT 7.0.

FYI, NT 5.2 was also the codebase for Windows XP x64 Edition, and MS's plans for Blackcomb/Vienna turned into a roadmapped final release of Vienna in 2011, with an intermediary stage - Windows Vista (NT 6.0) to be released in 2006/07.

I posted a thread in here talking about Vienna and Fiji. Guess no one looked at it except Rookie lolz.

I have used Windows Server 2003 from a friend of mine who owns it. It is pretty much like XP and can play games and everything but most of its software it comes with is for Server use. It is pretty much XP with 5.2nt instead of 5.1nt thats in XP. You can use it to play games and such but don't try older games since its worse than XP is for older games.

You mean... Microsoft was able to get worse with game compatibility?
