Today, I installed updates for my Windows Vista SP1, through its Windows Update feature

The updates included Internet Explorer 8 and Office 2007 SP2 (and other minor Office updates).

After installing these updates and restarting my computer, my custom themes (I used VistaGlazz) stopped working. I have yet to check VistaGlazz as I can't find the program on my computer (I probably deleted it a while ago). But will see if uninstalling and reinstalling will fix it. I will give an update on this.

A BIGGER problem are my windows. Usually when I open a window, say My Computer, and then click on my C drive, it stays on the same window. After I installed this update, whenever I open a folder or through a window, instead of being on the same window, it opens up a new one.

For example, I open up My Computer, then go to the C drive, and finally go to Program Files. Instead of all this happening in one window. A new window pops up for each one.

I have already gone through Tool -> Folder Options the "Browse Folders" section is still on "Open each folder in the same window". Yet it is still opening each folder in its own window.

Any solutions?

Try changing the setting, applying it, and setting it back and reapplying, to see if that changes anything ? :/

Ugh I remember that issue you are describing. It's a bug in file association I think, in that folders are not correctly assigned to explorer somehow. Googling will definitely give you a fix. Was something in regedit I believe.

Ok. It's been over a week. And I still have this annoying problem.

As for the custom themes, i decided to just restore everything to default and remove VistaGlazz altogether.

However, the folders are STILL opening in new windows. The only way I can get them to open in the same window is to Right Click -> Explore on the folder.

I've found fixes for XP, but unless I'm not searching right, I haven't found a definite fix for Vista.

I've tried everything, from what ConstanceJill said to just restarting the computer. To even using System Restore to go back before the update and then redownloading/reinstalling the update again. I have done this multiple times and it's getting annoying.

Because of a little bug, I haven't updated to IE8 or Office 07 SP2. I don't use IE, but it's nice to stay updated on my computer.

I'm going back and trying this again and again. While searching for fixes in between.

If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it.

It's only replaced patched uxtheme.dll, themeui.dll etc. to microsoft's, and you simply need to use newer patcher to add ability to use custom themes. For folders:
I solved this problem in several Vista computers like this:

 • Open regedit
 • Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\explore\command
 • In the Default registry key replace /same with /separate like this:
%SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe /same ,/idlist,%I,%L -> %SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe /separate ,/e,/idlist,%I,%L
• Reboot to be sure

If you have this value as /separate, try to replace with /same. It will helps you :) Because it window open parameter (same window - /same , separate - /separate) Try to play with /same and /separate/, and you will find right value, to open folders in same window. Don't forget to post right value here (if someone another has this problem)

I haven't found the solution yet. But I have found the root of the problem. It is the installation of IE8 on my Vista machine.

After another system restore, I decided to update everything except IE8. Which are the Office 2007 updates, which includes Office SP2. After a restart, I did not have the folder opening in new window problem.

I've tried installing IE8 through Windows Update and the exe file on the Microsoft website. Same results, folders opening in new windows.

As for the solution Was_ser has posted: Right now, before installation of IE8, the default key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\explore\command says this:

%SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe /separate,/e,/idlist,%I,%L

I think that it is weird that it is on separate, yet folders open in same window. After an installation of IE8, I changed "separate" to "same", restarted, and the problem is still there.

I will try this again, hopefully I can finally get this fixed and over with, because this is getting really annoying.

I wonder if this problem of installing IE8 and having folders open in new window is only happening to me, or if its throughout all Vista systems.

EDIT: after a quick Google search, I have found that many others have this problem. http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=748876 I am currently looking through this, and will post back if I find a solution.

Sorry for the double-post, but I can no longer edit my last post.

I have found the solution.

The solution that worked for me:

I had the same problem, the following procedure resolved all issues for me...

* open a new "Command Prompt" window by right-clicking and selecting "Run as administrator"; * at the prompt, run the command "regsvr32 actxprxy.dll".

Apparently this particular DLL does not get registered correctly for some users. I have no idea why. Microsoft probably needs to research the various software conflicts with the install, and correct this.

source: internetexplorer beta RE: IE8 Beta 2 Problem: New Tab/Window not opening

However, after reading through different places, there are several fixes that could work. I've tried these other fixes, but they did not work for me. I don't know how one can tell which solution to use, so just try everything until one works for you.

Other fixes include:

There are a few different fixes that have been posted in the last link..

So, if any of you run into this bug, there are many solutions to try.

Changed via Regedit, or via Explorer\IE8? EDIT: Try attached files. I've found it in vista file associations on internet. It's default folder associations.I hope it helps you.

My solution in post above. It's changes HKCR\Directory, and HKCR\Folder parameters to Vista's default. I hope it helps you.
