In the new house I just moved into and I was wondering how long it will take to get the wiring set up for the internet. It requires a wiring specialist to come in and rewire the house. Has anyone had any experience with how long this takes to get up and running? This is quick, I'm in the only working internet so sketchy on the dets. Thanks

We need you to be a lot more specific here.

Is he comming just to activate a connection, or is he going to be phyisically runing wires through the walls? What would this person be re-wiring if this is the case.

Will you be using a router/switch in your network?

You don't need to rewire a bloody thing. The neat freak will run their own wires between walls or under floors--depending on the vintage of the domicile, this can be easier said than done. Some places are far easier than others. Sheetrock, while messy, is very easy to cut through with a drill and jigsaw. The less perfection-inclined can simply stuff the cable under the baseboards (you do have them, don't you?), leaving ends out where necessary.

Depending on how intricate you'd like to be (to say nothing of how handy you are with a couple power tools), it can take anywhere from a couple hours to a day or two.

He wants to come over and hack your house for a little bit and slap it on your bill.

If there are phonelines in the house near where your computer(s) is/are, then you can get ADSL broadband no bother as long as your local exchange can handle it, and most can (most broadband providers offer a service to check whether you can or can't get broadband).

Unless you are using cable for internet, in which case someone from the cable company should be doing it and not some random nutter off the street. Time depends on the size of your house but it should be no more than three days if there are stairs, I think.

It depends on how much cigarette and beer money the guy needs. The longer he takes, the more they charge you... Sometimes. Other times they do by flat rate rather than per hour. But it really depends on the size of the house and if you want it run upstairs, as Reven said. My house was easy to wire, we just had to run it through the ceiling (tiled ceiling, so it was simple) then just drilled a hole in the wall to go to my mom's PC and the wireless router (we're gonna run a wire outside to get to the other side, so we can get rid of my reliance on wireless). It all really depends on specifics of the house.

I rly meant more like a day to a week to feed cables through the house, estimate. I have internet in the house, along with temporary wireless getting set up tomorrow.

thanks

As mentioned above, just use wireless.

Is there a real reason why you're not (using wireless)?

If you're looking for an estimate, I'd say anywhere from 1-2 days
