I am upgrading to XP Pro in a few months and heard that you need to register your current hardware with it as you install the hardwares. Is this true? If so, why does windows make you do this?

Nothing to worry about. All automatic and won't cause problems. In the past it would have caused activation problems with your copy of xp. Only if you changed motherboards a few times.
Microsoft put an end to that. The toll free number to activate was costing them money. Thus what hardware is registered will not matter. So long as you own a legal copy.
Also I believe what is registered has to do with when you activate online. Not during the actual installation.
