I just installed windows xp pro on my pc, it's a custom built computer with a xfx motherboard. After I installed all the drivers, including the onboard ac97 legacy audio driver, although it says I have no sound device installed. If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Does the motherboard in the BIOS settings have inbuilt sound card enabled ?

This is also a shot in the dark... because XP normally doesn't do this, only Win2k3, but check your services and ensure windows audio is running.

It has onboard AC97 audio, the driver, that came from the motherboard's installation CD, installed Legacy Audio driver.
I take what n0e says way too seriously

Yeah, I disabled windows audio by accident once (Trying to rid myself of the taskbar icon....then I found how I was SUPPOSED to do it...) and it does indeed disable sound....though your hardware would still be registered....
