I'm sure there was a thread like this before and someone responded "Lucas portrayed them as evil so they are", reading the "Luke is a Pansy" thread can tell you that in reality Han DID do more than Luke did.

So who is to say the Empire is not evil? but they were just given a bad rep.

Debate.

Debatable Things:

 1. There was that whole "Blow up Alderan" thing/Alderan was known as a revolutionary/turncoat World that was leading to the deathes of hundreds if not thousands of Imperial casulaties via the Rebel Alliance.
 2. Judging from the fact that they killed Lukes de-facto family for something that they could have been at the highest imprisoned for./The Droids had the plans to something that they believed could keep the "Peace", so that was crucial.
 3. The Emperor did Kill the Jedi for no good reason, they would have been a great Benefit for the goverment, people and the military/They were becoming suspicious of Palpatine and were going to kill him anyways.

Honestly I can't think of any other true Imperial attrocities.

Also guys.. please keep this in the movies, anything from Books or Video Games will not be considered.

Thanks.

After Anakin became Vader, he started to get more, and more, and more angry. More sociopathic. Eventually, by a new hope, he had completely become sociopathic.

The emporers and Darths were all evil and sociopathic muderers, and the minions are just hired mercenaries.

I'd say evil.

The empire was not evil, the governing body was. This is the problem even with real-life politics. People blame the sins of the government on its people. Many "citizens" of the Empire did not agree with it, but you couldn't very well say "Hey, I'm leaving!" unless you wanted to get subjugated. Even most of the troops weren't evil, per se. They were following orders and a lot of times didn't know some of the more atrocious things the Empire was doing.

I think George displayed the empire as evil is because they where a government of absolutes instead of a democracy.

After some research I'd say the Empire was not at all evil.

Anyone up for a debate?

Why not? Debating here is really fun. Just keep it within the rules.

Can't edit the last post but I just realised... this already was a debate. We're all fools.

The Empire wasn't evil per se, but they did have a totalitarian idea towards things. If you were against them, then you were enslaved or destroyed. Keep in mind though, the people who lived under the Empire were able to lead quiet lives and do their jobs. All the cities of the empire remained the same as they were before, just with a strong police force present. If you noticed in the films, the presence of the stormtroopers helped reduce the number of the criminal elements that were present.
