Making maps is alot of fun but takes work and learning. you just don't plop things down. You have to build wall by wall as your able to create about anything.

I would start here....... http://www.nibsworld.com/rtcw/ http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~surface/html/

Editor: http://www.qeradiant.com

compiler: http://www.planetpointy.com

q3map2: http://www.quake3world.com/cgi-bin/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Level+Editing&number=6

As a n00b myself, i recomend Nibs, as it is packed with hints for beginers.

your going to want to stay as simple as possible. first of all you dont need a compiler because most editors have built in ones. id start with GTKradiant aka QEradiant. but its almost a must to read the manuel or you will be lost because of hotkeys that were set up verry oddly.
