For sources you just read the books, watch the documentaries look at the better fan sites (SW.com is a frustrating moneygrabbing machine) Though yeah I agree that they would have had alot of trouble adapting the tanks to the cold, I assume the turrets were one the first things that they made sure would work in the cold, though I dunno why they left the shield gen sticking out like that.... its not like burying it would have heated it up.... unless it was buried and had melted the ice that it was under :uhm:

One huge difference between the Rebel and Imperial space forces is that the TIEs are short range fighters, ment to be deployed from bases, planets and star destroyers providing an intimidating show of force. The Rebels on the other hand, their fighters each have their own hyperdrives, allowing them to move ndependant of larger carrier ships. This is idealy suited to hit and run tactics.
