why are tie fighters called tie fighters?
TIE = Twin Ion Engine
or it could be because they are similair in shape to a bow tie or if you've seen one of those ties a clown wears (the ones that spin around)
TIE stands for Twin Ion Engine in the Star Wars universe. But that explination is really an afterthought because George Lucas thought they looked like bow ties. I found that explanation somewhere in this book: Amazon.com: From Star Wars to Indiana Jones: The Best of the Lucasfilm Archives: Mark Cotta, Shinji Hata: Books
they told you,
Tie (Twin ion engine) fighter
i've never herd of the bow tie thing, but that is why they are called that, they have 2 ion engines made by kuat engernering.

How has someone not posted the family guy blue harvest clip?
surprisingly the TIE was said to have been the successor to the V-wing........even though V-wings were much much much better
