Hello im a total newbie to mapping and so far I've been teaching myself how to do it. I am still getting the basics down using tutorials but I was wondering if there was a way to View your map without compiling it first. Other than the Viewport? I was working on a small map just practicing and I went to compile it then went back in to edit it and add some things. After I compiled it again and went back into the game it was totally messed up. Do I have to make the whole map first before compiling it?
your .map file does not change after compile as it creates a .bsp for the game to run off of. So, you can only screw up your map using GTKRadiant 1.2.10 not running or compiling your .map file....
There is no way to run your map without compiling it. The 3d view is more than enough in GTKRadiant not to mention your top and sides views. If you want to check lighting or how something works you need to compile the .map file. Using q3map2 instead of the one that comes with GTKRadiant or the Awfull WolfRad that shiped with the GOIY edition (why ship that garbage nobody knows) you can speed up compile times greatly as q3map2 optimizes into a triangle soup of brushes instead of the old fan method.
If you want to just compile a portion of your map like a room or part of a terrain just use the region tool to select part of your map and compile it for testing. I am not sure if WolfRad supports the region option.
you can find the awsome q3map2 here. http://www.quake3world.com/forums/
