Whenever I try to install it it says "Cannot find installation of BattleField 1942"

It's because you have changed the registery by either reformatting your primary boot partition or using a utility that has changed the order of your drive letters. The patch uses the info in your registry to find the install point of the game, if it can't find that info it will not install.
You may need to edit the registry if you want to fix it without installing, otherwise reinstall the game over the old copy.
You will find the key you need to edit under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/EA GAMES/Battlefield 1942/
Once there you should see a string value like this:
"GAMEDIR REG_SZ e:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942"
If you don't see a line like that you will need to create one, if it is already there check to see if the installed path is correct, if not change it to the correct value.
Note: playing around with your registry is DANGEROUS - back it up before screwing around with it - any harm arising from following these instructions are Microsofts fault cause they invented the damn thing!!!
