Simple question. Right now my MoBo has a 4X AGP slot. What would happen if I put a 8X vid card in this slot? Would it run? Burn out my MoBo? What? Same goes for other way around. I ordered a New MoBo w/8x AGP slot. What would happen to a 4X vid card.

Silly question, but just wondering.

Well an 8X card will work in a 4X slot, you just wont get the full potential of the card. :( I've been runnin' an 8X card on this MB which has a 4X slot just fine. Now as far as runnin' an 4X card in a 8X slot? Just about the same thing will happen. Just know that alot of newer MB's will only allow a 1.5 volt card. I could be wrong, but my understanding is that most Nvidia cards from the GF3 & up are 1.5 volt cards. At least my Ti500 is. I don't know sqwat about ATI stuff. :D

Thanks Major,

I found a Gforce FX 5600 256MB card for $141 on NewEgg and wanted to get it to go with my comp I'm building, but I also wanted to run it now and my MoBo I have right now only has 4X.

BTW: I decided to go with AMD. Ordered a Gigabyte GA-7N400-L MoBo and a 2800+ Athlon XP chip

I have a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP that I loved, but it died when my PSU went out. I really like Gigabyte boards, but I'm not real happy with their service right at the moment. Been two months & I ain't heard nothin' back. They sent me some forms to fill out, ( which I done ) they were supposed to e-mail some RMA's, but nothin' yet. :(

I was also lookin' at that same board, but decided on the Asus A7N8X Deluxe. I also ordered some Corsair XMS TwinX PC3200 1 gig ( 2 x 512 ).

My specs as of now: XFX KT33F-ANB Athlon XP2400+ - Speeze all copper heatsink modified w\an 80mm Speeze fan on top. Corsair 512MB PC2700 DDR 333MHz - Thermaltake Active Memory Cooling Kit ASUS V9280TD Geforce4 Ti4200 128MB - Zalman ZM80A-HP VGA Heatpipe Cooler 120gig IBM Deskstar - Speeze 4B02S4 Hard Disk Cooler LG 16x DRD-8160B DVD LG GCE 8240b 24x10x40 CD-RW AC97 Avance Logic ALC650 Polk-Audio AMR150 speakers NEC AccuSync AS70 17" Windoze XP Pro All inside a highly ( and I do mean highly ) modified Gateway case w\ 4 80x80mm Speeze case fans, Vantec round cables all around & an Antec 430W TRUE430 PSU

Yea man that Dual BIOS is too sweet. :D I had a friend of mine that knows a bit more about puters come over and we muffed up a BIOS flash just to see if it actually works. LOL It did I was amazed man. It booted just like nothing was wrong. Took more than I woulda known to do to get the original back again tho. I wouldn't suggest to anybody to try it yourself, just know that it's there if the main BIOS gets screwed somehow. Very nice feature.

Hi all,

All 8X Mobo's will let you run 4X AGP, but keep in mind a 2X AGP Vid card will likely fry it (or an old AGP 4X vid card, like some of the original TNT2's that don't properly support the 4X AGP specs).

BTW, good choice on Mobo SniperWolfen, I have put a few computers together using those Mobo's (the GA-7N400 PRO version) and they are just fine Motherboards. Not saying that the VAXP wasn't a good Mobo, it was, but the N400 would be my choice if I was replacing mine. Also don't forget the N400 PRO supports Serial ATA and Firewire, almost a necessity these days, whereas the N400-L doesn't. If you get the PRO you will be all set to get some serious hard drive speed using SATA RAID when SATA drives come down to a good price (not long know, they have already come down a great deal).

Have fun

You can get a dual bios for just about any motherboard. Just look up "Bios Savior" on google. :mepimp:
