Ohh, I am getting very frustrated with bf42. Everytime I join a server, the game freezes up after a few minutes. When it freezes, the keyboard will not work, I have to restart my computer manually. I've tried fooling with video drivers, the sound settings in bf and my AGP controller drivers, but still nothing. Anyways here is my system:

AMD Athlon 2000+XP Windows XP 512MB 2100DDR Ram ATI Radeon 8500 (128MB) Driver-Autocatalyst 2.4 Asus A7V333 Motherboard Bios version 1015(using onboard sound, but I've tried soundblaster 5.1 and it still freezes) I'm using the VIA all in one v4.43 drivers for AGP and Bus controllers

The strange thing is that medal of honor works fine, but freezing has also occured with the Splinter Cell demo. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

yo, i have had this prob b4,

There is a couple of things to try:

Uninstall BF And All Your Sound, GFX ect drivers to the windowds defualt, re-install your divers and re-install bf, if this works its because you probably put a new driver on after you installed bf.

If that no-work, its prob cause something had wacked your registery (battlefeild is deeply rooted into the reg), if you have a back up, import it, if not, sorry dude but a Foramt And Complete Re-install is neccasary, cause i do alot of reg-editing, i have to scrub both of my comps down 1 a month!!!!

SnakeEyes - I have the same mobo as you and I wouldn't use the onboard sounds. First off, it decreases performance dramatically. Second thing C-Media isn't the best maker of onboard sound cards. But I noticed that there has been a recent driver update on the microsoft website. Check it out!

Thanks to all who have replied ShOrD, I was curious what manufacturer and type of ram you are using on the A7V333. I was wondering if thats my problem since the freezing also occurs in the Splinter Cell demo (which like BF may also be a ram pig?). I am using Azen ram now, which I hear isn't the best name. Its weird with this Asus board...if I put the ram in slots 1 and 2 the medal of honor game freezes...if I put them in slots 1 and 3 it works fine. However, battlefield freezes in both positions. Have you encountered this with the A7V board? I've taken the board back and got another one...same problem Could my ram be causing all my problems? Thanks again

 I actually had to return my board too because of the same problem you are having. The sound card, Augidy Gamer 5.1, would not install and would not work for some reason. But the new one I got seemed to do the trick. Also, make sure that the sound card, if you use that sb 5.1 again, is in a certain pci slot. It's all wierd with that. Mine is in the 3rd one down and won't work in another other one. My guess is a conflict with the irq's. I tried using Nanya in slots 0 and 1 and it worked fine but I decided to go with Crucial since it's AWESOME memory. Let me know if these suggestions help out.

I had the same freezing problem on my comp and it fixed itself when I upgraded from 2000 to xp. Unfortunately the cause isn't the same on all computers only the outcome. I read through these forums and tried everything that everyone else tried for weeks, drivers, agp driving force, etc... The only thing for mine was the XP upgrade. Why, some driver I didn't know about got updated repaired, it fixed my registry, I have no idea.

Check the chips on the ram and see if they are from the same manufacturer. Ram can cause this problem also, cheaper ram (generally ones with out lifetime warranties) recycle chips from old ram. Companies get it in and test it to find one chip no working so they sell it to other companies that take all these different chips and make ram. Yes this will work but with more errors. You will pay more dollar wise for ram with matching chips but you will pay less in terms of aggrivation. Its worth the extra money to buy premium ram if you haven't already. Also with faster ram of today it can overheat and cause problems. Although as long as you keep a heatsink on it and the case temp down this shouldn't be a problem.

A good idea for any machine is to rebuild it about once per year even though windows xp and 2k are much better at uptime than previous versions on average I've read that they only go for about a month with out any problems. As you install and uninstall programs things get left behind that can cause problems. I read one article in the forums of someone who debugged the app with visual studio and found that an old gravis gamepad driver was being accessed and when he deleted it it cured the freeze.

Hi SnakeEyes,

If the puter is locking up in multiple games it's probably not registry or OS problems. Splinter Cell demo is very demanding on vid card, as is BF1942 (both much more so than MOHAA). Consider that it may be a hardware problem other than ram (maybe vid card overheating - or CPU) which can cause exact same problem as you describe.

There are a numner of possible fixes for problems with this board on this forum, many of them reckon you have to have ram certified for this board - but I suppose any top notch memory should be ok - but no cheap memory.

Good luck
