i remember way back when FF was running a UT2004 demo server. one day the server crashed and redm (the god of FF) turned up telling us that the processor was melted into the socket...
LOL -- I took a old Cyrix chip and over clocked it one time -- and then pulled its heatsink off -- 2 mins later it Melted off the board - it was wicked
well in the early days at gaminguk.net we had 3 master servers running 4 gaming servers each, Christine, Dani, and Britiney, well one friday evening we lost 4 of our gaming servers, on monday we got the bad news, total meltdown of the master server, no recovery. Poor Christine :(
Speaking of CPU overheating....
Ask Stinkin Gringo about his cpu alarm that sounded like a euro police car... Shotglass and I have been subjected to that on numerous occasions on ts in the past... He fixed that problem now. I miss the sound though.:)
A few months ago I had a heat sink clip break off a motherboard. I tried to jury-rig it back on. I turned it on for less than 10 seconds and there was a melted metal stench through out the room.
Heck from your experience, maybe the cpu is still good. I never bothered trying it again. I could get another fan with a different clip configuration and try it I guess..
My Athlon 64 3000+ is always running at 70 C, so I need better fans. I remember watching a segment on a show called "The Screen Savers" (A TechTV Show) where an expert (And I Mean Expert, Holy Cow! He once made a put a computer in an old ammo can!) modder by the name of Yoshi sanded the bottom or sides off of the heatsink and it dropped the temperature by 10 C. One of the other things he said you could do, was take the plastic sides off and have a small 30mm fan blowing in towards the processor.
Ah, I miss The Screen Savers...:(
