Hi all! I've been away a while since my PC cant really handle bf1942 and soon i'm gettin a new one (wohoo! :nodding: :smokin: ) But the other day I had the Pate.b virus on my machine and it wiped my PC to the floor! Managed to get it off by reinstalling McAfee by coping the disc on to my hard drive. But the problem was that I tried to use another virus-scanner I got of the web. (AVG 7.0! - A piece of crap! :fistpunch: ) Now I tried to use this but it screwed up my files. I manged to restore most of them but... some were to bad to be replaced, now here is me prob... :deal: 1. When I try to load a .txt file from the desktop (or any other place) it displays :cannot find the file : C:\...blah,blah,blah.txt(or one of its components.)Make sure the path and the filename and that all required liberies are available. 2.When loading a dll by using start/run it will not work, it displays the following message : The file does not have a file associated with it for performing this action.Create an assocition in My Computer by clicking then View and then clicking Folder options.

I'm sorry but I am using Win 98SE - the most boring looking windows yet! :moon: lol! Thanks for all your help! :smokin: :smokin: :smokin:

Hi Supa Sniper,

I have been using free AVG for years (ver 6 is free) and have never had a problem.

The text file problem may simply be that wordpad (or notepad or MS Word whichever you use) has been removed by the AV program and is unable to run.

The second thing is, I have never personally tried to start a .DLL from the run command, and in theory they shouldn't be started from there, they are libraries of sub-routines (hence DLL - Dynamic Link Libraries) that multiple programs can access. There is no program you can associate them with to run.

To fix the text file problem you will need to find out which program it is that is trying to open them and restore it from the win98 disk - ie: if it is wordpad.exe that is missing or damaged simply go throught he .cab files utnil you find it and then copoy in it into the windows/system folder. Your DLL problem I can't help you with, sorry.

Hope this helps

Yeah I had AVG 6 for years and it was cool But I installed the 7.0 ver which couldn't fix any files, you could only delete them. (And it thought the virus was Pirate B :uhoh: ) So after gettin of my machine I fixed wiv McAfee. So i'll try and sort out the word.txt problem! Thanks for your help! :cya:

Hi Supa Sniper,

The 7 version is for purchase only, if you download it you only get a crippled version until you cough up the bucks. The Free AVG is still version 6 and is still being updated to handle the latest viruses.

Have fun

Oui, I have tried this method of resolving the the word.txt problem, but no luck! I couldn't find the cab driver so I replaced all of them and no luck so i'm stuck! BTW I am using crappy win98se.

(My memory is so decrepid that it cant even use those animated smilies! :fistpunch: )

Hi Supa Sniper,

So far so good. Now once you have the wordpad.exe file restored (which you should have if you restored all the files, then you have to go and re-associate .txt files with it by going into explorer/file types and selecting the .txt file type, editing it then browsing to the location of wordpad.exe and selecting that as the application to open .txt files.

Let me know how you go
