I am running a Toshiba satellite with ATI Mobile Radeon graphics card 2.4 ghz 512mb ram and when i start up BF 1942 everything works fine until I actually go to load the maps at which point after loading the first id say 1/9th of the bar it crashes to desktop with no errors or anything. This is a consistent problem with any map and I have tried putting the sound to the minimum settings. I have no idea what to do please help.

I have some news for you, it may be good or bad depending on your mobo manufacturer. Following is a quote from ATI's page regarding driver support for mobile Radeon's.
NOTE - Display drivers and multimedia applications for Laptops and Notebooks are NOT available for download from ATI CustomerCare.
The display driver supplied with a given laptop or notebook has been customized for:
the built-in flat panel display any other graphics or video options installed in that specific computer. As a result of these modifications, ATI CustomerCare is unable to offer "generic" drivers for laptops and notebooks.
We strongly recommend that you: use the driver supplied with your laptop or notebook computer, or, obtain a driver update from the manufacturer of your laptop or notebook computer.
Support for a specific driver feature (such as hardware acceleration of OpenGL) may be incorporated into a particular display driver (or not) at the discretion of the laptop or notebook manufacturer. If you have any questions regarding the features or functionality of a particular display driver, please consult with your laptop or notebook manufacturer.
The other thing is you didn't mention which mobile Radeon you had, so support may be there but performance may not, cause there are mobile radeons from the 7500 model right up to the 9000, however the only model I could find from toshiba that uses a radeon was the Satellite 1905, is this your model?
If it is you are using the ATI M-6 Mobile Radeon and this has big problems with games.
Here is a forum of complaints about HP's that use this chip and how you might be able to fix it.
Also here is a link to the driver download on Toshiba's site for that chipset.
Good luck mate, I think you are going to need it.

Wow I guess I should have looked that up. I thought they were like the GeForce 2 go and the GeForce 4 go.
awww **insert lots of explicatives** your saying that the salesman who said "Oh this laptop is made for gaming" was bull******* more than a double rear ended bull? UGH, is there anyway I can update my laptops graphics card? If so which do you suggest and yes that is the model I have and thankyou so much for dealing with this problem if you are willing i can be reached at Masamure Fencer on Aim or emandelup@Hotmail.com via msn messenger to talk about this without posting like madmen Also I have hte latest drivers already so that is not the issue (for the M6 that is) and im not good with hardware stuff so youll have to explain things in more detail than usual for me (sorry). I have yet to download direct x 9.0 shoudl I?
That is the bad thing about laptops. Can't really upgrade anything but RAM and sometimes hard drive.
