 Okay out of pure and total frustration, I started from Scratch on everything and here is what I did in this exact order.
Configuration: Athlon 1GHz Abit MOBO 512K RAM Windows XP Home nVidia Geforce 4 64Meg
First off, I bench marked my BF1942 without doing any of this and I was getting like 10 to 12 FPS average. GAG.
1) Uninstalled and deleted all BF directories. They linger after an uninstall. 2) Speed disked my drive. 3) Double Checked all of my setting in my bios regarding AGP Card. Enabled 4X AGP, 1 Wait State etc.... made sure everything was cool. 4) Uninstalled my graphics card drivers (nVidia) and reinstalled 41.09 Detonator Drivers. 5) Uninstalled and reinstalled my SB Live! Sound Card Drivers 6) Reinstalled Directx 9 6) Ran RivaTuner to overclock my Graphics Card and set my refresh rate to 1024x768x100hz. 7) Uninstalled my default monitor and installed the correct drivers for my monitor. 8) Installed BF1942 Retail in default directory. 9) Installed RTR Retail in default directories. 10) Patched with 1.3 11) Installed Merciless Enhancements. 12) Changed my sound card buffers from 100 to 1000 in the init.con file. 13) Changed Allow Refresh Rates from 0 to 1 in bf1942 14) Ran Game....
I noticed right away several things. First the progress bar just screamed up the progress meter. I turned on full sounds with Hardware Acceleration on and get very few pops. Not like before. Did a FPS check and now getting 35-42 Average FPS!!!!
It appears, that 1942 installs and sets itself up to your current optimal settings at the time of install. I then tried something, I then overclocked my CPU and my frame rates dropped off again. So, for shits and grins, tore out 1942, overclocked my PC, reinstalled, then turned off overclocking, and the game ran horrible. So my conclusion is, that once the game is installed, nothing you do to tweak anything has any positive effect. Tweak everything BEFORE installation. Cause once it's installed, you can't tweak again after the fact.
Now... who wants a bullet in the ear? Anyone?
Well the only thing I noticed is that the game gave random freeze-ups when I overclocked my GFTi4600...maybe I'll try uninstalling, overclocking and then installing again, see if that helps.
Thanks for the info...and BTW isn't 512K RAM a bit low tun run BF
Overclocking..... a cross between art/science/mystisism.
RivaTuner will scan your registry for your card and give you a range to which you MAY be able to overclock. Overclocking can fry stuff, so unless you really know what you are doing, don't just run that slider up and go "There...rock on." Do it in small increments. I push it up a little, go into the game. take a look around. Notice any graphic breakups, tearing, etc.... then you went over for THAT GAME. What's nice about RivaTuner is that you can set a profile up for a particular game, when it's launched, it will set the overclocking up on a per application basis. Very nice.
If you get any goofy graphics, you pushed too hard. My way of doing it, is to push the overclocking up on the graphics processor, till I see some goofy stuff or lockups. Then I back off 5 points. Once that stablizes, I then start pushing the memory speed up the same way. I've noticed that by tweaking the memory, is when hard locks occur most of the time. Then once I find where I can actually play and not see strange stuff (well, more than normal strange stuff), I set the profile in RivaTuner to set the clocking for that app.
Also, really make sure, your BIOS AGP stuff is correct. THIS IS A MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR impact on frame rate. MAKE REALLY CERTAIN you have the most recent BIOS flash. I cannot stress the importance of this. You noob's... out there, FLASHING A BIOS, INCORRECTLY MAY TOAST YOUR BIOS, to which you have to get it physically replaced. If you have ANY DOUBT what-so-ever on how to flash, don't DO IT. Take to a service tech that knows your machine. They shouldn't charge anything or very little to do this.
Since my first post, my average frame rate has not dropped below 42FPS not even under heavy stuff turned on. I have the graphics turned all the way up, Hardware Accleration on Sound with the highest settings enabled. And running smooth as a baby's butt.
Online play, I only connect to servers with under 100 ping. If no servers are open that I want to get on, I wait, cause it's not worth jumping in and getting annoyed. I get on servers with high players count, low ping, green light next to the server icon, and it runs no less than 42 fps.
This is the same game, hardware, everything, that only gave me 12 fps prior to this gut ripping and reinstall.
And to respond to 512K.... lol. yes, that's a little low. :) But since I run CP/M it works just fine. NOW THAT SHOWS MY AGE.
RivaTuner download.... best overclocker for nVidia PERIOD. I've tried them all.

Thanks for the links and the info...My vid card runs smooth OC'ed with UT2003, UII or C&C: Generals but when I overclock the core even 5 Mhz, it will start giving me BS in BF
