I have major troubles running BF1942 in the fact that its paging like mad. I have a Duron 1200 win2k pro ,384 mb ram + ATI radeon 8500. I would have thought it should run ok with this set up. I have sound on 11mhz No other apps runnning, Defragged, And god knows what else.
Memory would be my first upgrade but surely 384mb is enough..? Isnt it.?
Oh and dont flame me cause ive read all the other posts about performance. I love this game but just want it to be smooth..!!
Also a list of win2k services that are stoppable would be good..anybody wanna make a list up with me...?
I would suggest first of all upgrading all your drivers cause your right, you do seem to have enough memory, and while the Duron 1200 is not a world killer your setup should still give you a minimum of around 45 to 50 fps.
Does it thrash all the time you are playing the game? If it does it could be a memory problem, or it could be a HDD prob, try defragging your HDD and then see what happens. Also check you page file settings, I have seen this problem when the page file is set to a fixed amount (even though it is theoretically set large enough for the game). If it is a fixed size try changing it to being managed by windows.
Hope some of this helps

I have installed the latest 4in1s, the latest catalyst drivers and the latest ati control panel. I have a seagate cheetah 10k ultra160 scsi hd.
It only seems to be paging when im moving and looking around.
good point about the page file,, Im gonna let windows manage it, as i have it set to ram+12mb at the mo..
I also have a crabby soundblaster card in at the moment.. May try disabling that tonight and see what happens..
I don't spend enough time here

How do you change your page file setting? Thanks
Right click my computer and go to properties,
Go to the advanced tab, then click performance options, Second box down is for page file. Click Change.
I have now put the page file on my D: drive. This is a Ultra2 scsi. I'll let you know if makes any difference.
Microsoft say paging file should be ram +12mb, In my case about 404mb. A computer guru told me it should be 3xram. Im gonna try both.
Also if you set the page files min + max the same it will stop your os making changes to the actual size. Hance frees up disk time.
Then that could be your problem futura,
For this game your page file should 500Mb minimum! I have played a few other 3D games, not many though, that would crash if the page file was under 500Mb.
Hope this works for you.

You definetly need some more ram in for this game to run good. I too had 384mb not very long ago and bf1942 would thrash a lot plus the load times were atrocious. So i bought another 256 stick and all problems went away, no more thrashing and load times are now cut in half.
I have a major improvement now,,, Page file increase + sound on low setting + took out the sound card and using on-board sound + defrag + someservices stopped + anti virus turned off + icq off.
Im still only getting 20-30 fps, sometimes 11 fps when theres lots going on. Palm trees + Planes + tanks etc
Im gonna take your advice and put another 256 stick in there and also put a Athlon XP2000 chip in . Hopefully this will increase fps.
Not only has this game cost me 30quid to buy, im gonna have to upgrade my pc cause i love it soo much...!!!!!
Thanks for help guys
Anybody know the syntax to create a script to stop NT services..?
I am running only 256 Mb DDR DRAM but get min 70fps with lots going on with my GF4 MX440, you should be getting 40-50 fps on yours even with tanks and palm trees around. Sure the extra memory will improve performance, and the CPU also will help, but if there is some other problem, and it certainly sounds like there is - only 11fps sometimes, it still may not give you what you should be getting. Like I said my 70 fps is min - it gets up to 90 when I'm on my lonesome with no trees tanks etc.
It could be your soundcard drivers, other ppl have had a similar problem. I suggest downloading the latest drivers from your mobo manufacturer for the onboard sound.
Also more info on my system. Athlon XP2000+, 60Gb 7200 rpm Seagate HDD, Gigabyte GA7-VTXH+ mobo with Onboard Creative sound. I have a friend with an Athlon 1400 (not that much faster than the Duron 1200) with the same mobo, vid card and mem and he gets similar performance to mine.
I don't want you to spend a lot of money and still be dissapointed so consider other things before lashing out.

The strange thing is that i get upto 80 - 90 fps when stood still but as i start moving and looking it goes right down to 20 - 30.
If theres lots going 10 - 20.
Something else ive noticed is that the fps dont increase when i lower the graphics settings. I may aswell leave those on max.
