In the game TES4: Oblivion, when you attack an NPC with your staff (e.g. fire a bolt of lightning at them) does it raise your destruction skill at all?

I only ask because it just seems odd that if it doesn't, then I may aswell use a sword instead & just rely on my destruction spells instead of a staff as the destruction spells (as far as I know) are more powerful than a staff anyway.

I believe it doesnt. And most of the time a Staff is more powerfull because it can shoot much faster and it doesnt drain your Magicka.

Staves are self-powered, they do not draw upon the player's Magicka and hence do not provide skill boosts after extensive use - they do, however, require recharging which usually costs a fair bit of gold, unless you have ready access to Varla stones. They're mostly useful in tight spots where you need some effective "crowd control" but lack the Magicka or skill to cast the relevant spell. Otherwise, you'd be better off with a regular spell or scroll.

Actually if you want to use magic items (staffs, enchanted swords, bows, etc) the best thing to do is get Umbra and Azura's Star. Free refils anyone?
