I saw many threads about very cool stuff, about girls :) , bikes, remote controlers, glasses etc. Unfortunatelly (spelling?) those threads are not so popular...

The Melee is a bad idea and it's scrapping was not only inevitable but for the forum's own good. I predicted its demise almost as soon as it was created, and I would predict a similar demise if someone short-sighted enough to create it again does so.

I think a Rant and Rave forum in the General section may be slightly better for what you desire it for. Such as they have for each game-specific forum. Where flaming other members is not permitted. For therein was the problem that gnawed away at the Melee until it finally keeled over and died. Almost immediately after its creation, several people complained to me that although they recognised the fact it is not serious, they could tell some flames aimed at them probably represented the actual feelings of the poster, and that it offended / disturbed them to learn of these feelings. The reason GF is one of the best forums around is because of its general lack of flaming, and quick response times from the moderators should any occur. The Melee directly contradicted that.

And, again as I predicted, it spilled over into mainstream forums. People who'd started out flaming in The Melee thought it was perfectly OK everywhere else. Known and respected members allowed personal conflicts which had inevitably occured there to spill over. Respect for others noticably decreased. And the effects of that are still around.

The Melee is dead. Let's not play god and try and have it reanimated. Apart from only prolonging its lifespan until its ultimate death again, it's really no good for the forum. Yes, some people can take it as a joke, but others cannot. As was demonstrated. The same WILL happen again. Leave the damned thing be.

Anyway. If I were the people in charge, I would create three threads here and sticky them. A thread dedicated to Iraq / the Middle East. A thread dedicated to America and her politics. And a thread dedicated to the war on terrorism. The only new threads that would not be piled into the relevant sticky would be those such as A SINGLE Nick Berg thread. The importance and thus the survival of such threads would have to be measured by Moderators, of course. These main threads would change with the times. If a war on Cuba happened, for example, a new thread on that subject would be stickied. That way, we keep The Pub from looking like a giant forum about war.

1. No flaming other cultures. I know I saw a lot of American flaming, some Canadian flaming, and European flaming. I think that was one reason AzH took the Melee away from us.

This actually had nothing to do with our (it was a joint senior staff decision, not mine alone) decision to remove the melee forum.

2. Don't take what other people say seriously. It is a freaking place to make fun of eachother for crying out loud! You cannot expect no one to say anything about you. That is what the place is for.

This was exactly the reason the melee was removed. People took things way too seriously. Others posted with intentional seriousness. Any of you who were here when it first started will note the funny shit which happened in there. It was a place where we would rib each other without remorse, in the spirit of fun, and knowing that it wasn't at all serious and was not at all meant. What it turned into, was opportunism at it's worst. See something you don't agree with in the Pub? Take into into melee and be as insulting about another's views as humanly possible. This is, actually when I think about it, one of the causes of the deterioration of the Pub. It was easier to go to the melee and post, "Hey MemberX, your a dick for your opinions, eat shit and have a hernia", rather than responding here and validating your argument. The melee, whilst fun in parts, destroyed our ability to form rational arguments. It won't be coming back. Ever.

I'd be lying if I said I did. So I'll lie; yes :p.

Then I at least think we should try a rant thing, as Matt put. We can piss off on ourselves about our own problems, instead of flaming other people. I mean I don't know about you, but I like to release a little bit of anger and fustration, even if it is on the internet. It helps to type out your problems.

Only problem is, I see such a forum escalating too. Only takes one person to rant about something they hate that someone else likes, and boom, confrontation.

That's just like asking for a tame melee. What would be the difference between there & here? Not much.

Order is better then chaos, it's better to keep the pub how it is now with only serious topics. The other junk can be posted in general, unless it's complete and utter spam. It does get boring with the same old topics but you should be asking the world for new events, new things to talk about.

I myself am tired of speaking in politcal threads simply because of how boring they get, and how often I must repeat myself. If you don't like the current topics, make some new ones like dread said. Don't leave it up to the other members to make topics you like. Thats the reason why members are allowed to make threads.........
