Archmage Cleps;4310420Woah...where did you grow up?

I've seen enough of it, though usually it was raro sachets or something similar. Snorting it's a bit much though, probably will lead to kids becoming crack whores.

tyrannicida;4310994Because society has realised that having people learn why things are bad works longer-term than fear of an authority. Quite frankly society wasn't much less criminal back in the time when people "disciplined" their children.

The same applies to other things. Ultimately someone who does not consider for example rape or murder wrong will not refrain from it, unless he is locked up or killed.

Why things are bad from a reasoned standpoint is entirely subjective, if you don't share the goal laid out in the system then there's no reason for you to accept the morality. All forms of teaching someone why a thing is wrong eventually boil down to behavioural conditioning in order to form the emotional triggers upon which the rest of it is built. Murder and rape aren't right and wrong, those concepts have no objective truth for us to teach. We no more teach people right and wrong now than we did when we beat the shit out of them and told them that a certain thing was wrong, all we do is teach people to feel bad in certain situations and good in others.

I believe feelings like empathy can be found outside of behavioral conditioning and are within humans as well as other intelligent animals.

It's normal for kids to copy grownups, but snortin stuff :Puzzled:. Geuss it's al part of the new "cool" stuff , like 13 year old girls behaving like whores and the guys like pimps 'cause thats what they see on TV. If the media keeps showing criminal behavior as being cool and trendy it's normal for the kids to pick it up. The hard part is , how do you react when it's your kids that do those things, I mean threats don't always work and mostly have the opposite effect of what you desire.

Asides from the fact that empathy is a scientific falacy, (you don't experience other's suffering as your own or you'd be insane from it all.) Empathy isn't the same as right and wrong. If it were you wouldn't need to teach those things people just 'have' them in the same degree as they had empathy.

I second that.

Light physical punishment may only be appropriate for when children are too young to reason with and even then it's a piss-poor way to teach things.

If your parents have to beat you when you are old enough to be influenced by peer pressure regarding.. well, anything, take these drugs for example. Either you are suffering from some mental/physical imbalance, or your parents have failed you.

Crude but true But let's not forget that children are being exposed to negative influences much sooner than like 20 years ago. When my 10 yearold would come home totally wasted I'm pretty sure he'd get a slap in the face once he's sober again.

At my school a really cool slammer could buy you either half an ounce of meth or a baggie of heron.
