Before I say anything else, this is not a discussion about religious beliefs. Keep that in it's black hole of a thread.

Alright, so this is something I've noticed getting FAR out of hand on these forums. Why is it that people are incapable of respecting someone else's religious beliefs, or lack thereof? Whenever a thread has even a REMOTELY religious undertone, such as in discussions of abortion or censorship or whatever else, it ultimately comes down to a bunch of pissing and moaning about fundamentalists and atheists. Why can't you guys just sit down, chill out, and let people believe (or not believe) whatever they want.

This is coming from an atheistic/agonisticish type of person, by the way, but as far as I'm concerned it is a broad spectrum of people here who are incapable of any form of religious tolerance. So woosname is an atheist? Big deal, get on with your life, and just debate with him like you would anyone else. And so you find out someone else is a creationist? So what? Let them have their beliefs, and show as much respect for them as you would anyone else.

We all have beliefs and idea that we hold dear, and none of us want them to be treaded on or thrown out the window, so how about we extend that same courtesy to everyone else?

/end rant

We can't blame other people because it's their way of thinking...

Ideas are to be respected based on their merits, not merely because people have them.

That's no way to speak of a black woman's vagina.

Because, frankly, some homo sapiens aren't wired to think rationally. Their religious (or non-religious) beliefs are so ingrained into their mentality that any thought of opposing points of view are frowned upon and shat on.

We all have beliefs and idea that we hold dear, and none of us want them to be treaded on or thrown out the window, so how about we extend that same courtesy to everyone else?

Personally, I loathe organized religion while apathetic to a belief in a higher being.

However, if you are apart of an organized religion, I won't hold it against you personally. Just don't shove your religious rhetoric down my throat and you're golden.

I'm talking about beliefs, not ideas. The most important thing I'm learning as a anthropologist is to not look down on anyone else's beliefs. That is essentially the reason for any major problem in the world today.

And what I'm saying is simply they shouldn't shove their beliefs down your throat, and neither should atheists shove our ideas down anyone else throats. Compare the following sentences.

"God does not exist." "You're an idiot for thinking God exists."

This is the difference, this is the problem.

But what are you going to do about it? Moan and complain about them? We've done that in the religious discussion thread, and in all honesty, for the most part it's useless. Let's be honest here. Say you hijack this thread and use it as an excuse to start bitching about how Christians don't really understand, they never listen and they don't respect you (cue typical five-year-old's tantrum). So what? What is your bitching going to do? It is far better for both you and everybody else to respect other people's beliefs, even though you 'know' in your heart and mind they are completely and utterly wrong, and try look past that. Otherwise, it's just being petty and narrow-minded.

Well, how about; why should we, as the human race, condone such ridiculous notions? IMO, the time for understanding is long gone. Every serious problem on this earth, every fundamental error, is brought about by religion. And you know what? It doesn't even exist! The only thing stopping our race from evolving into the next stage, a stage of technological marvels and true peace and freedom is the fuckfest of stupidity called religion. Fuck that. Hunt them down and systematically remove them, like you would any kind of termite or roach, leeching on the foundations of goodwill, preventing us from our destinies.

Bzzt, wrong. Major problems in the world exist thanks to people thinking all opinions and beliefs are worthy of respect. A whole lot of them are NOT.

Fuck that. Hunt them down and weed it out, don't let them be.

And how are you going to do that? It is a breach of the UDHR to even make a law discriminating against people on the basis of religious belief, let alone enforce it.

IMO, the time for understanding is long gone. Every serious problem on this earth, every fundamental error, is brought about by religion.

 I would like to see when we were ever understanding about religious beliefs...

And both Iosef Stalin and Mao Zedong were both notable atheists. So sadly, I will have to ignore that bit of your argument, sorry.

And you know what? It doesn't even exist! The only thing stopping our race from evolving into the next stage, a stage of technological marvels and true peace and freedom is the fuckfest of stupidity called religion.

I'm afraid to say, that as the cynic I am, that such a thing does not exist. There is no such thing as 'true peace'. And even though I think religion is stupid, it is undeniable that religion has been a great source of hope and decency in the world, too. Just the same as there is nothing so absolute as true peace, judging religion purely on its negative points is equally absolute, and equally naive.
