Normally I am not one for the cut-and-paste, but this article is well-balanced and serves as food for thought. Seeing as though there has not yet been an abortion discussion, in my knowledge, with such an ambiguous and unbiased opener, i think I'll open the can of worms.

A Late Decision, a Lasting Anguish

This is not a plain old abortion thread. My question for discussion is this: How does abortion affect the unborn child? Not whether it is wrong, not whether abortion is the right of the mother. What do you happens to the fetus when preganancy is terminated? Do you think that the child should live a short life of pain, or be terminated in the womb? I am not interested in law on this one.

And what did that baby do wrong that all the other babies are innocent of, exactly?

Why should it be up to the woman if she has been raped, but not under any other circumstances?

colonel_bobNo, fire has no senses. It can't feel if you poked it or not. Therefore it is not alive.

Oh, that must be what the 'S' stands for (it wasn't specified). However, using this model, does bacteria have senses? Or what about a virus? Both of these are alive...

My opinions...

Killing a developing fetus should very rarely be an option. People will say "but it should be the mother's choice"...but this seems to suggest that because we cannot see the child, because it is still inside the womb, it is merely an inconvenient "add-on" to the mother's body, when in fact it is a separate human being that is beginning to have conciousness of its own. Which brings me onto the next point... ...At the very first stages of pregnancy there is no separate human entity. There is no conciousness developing. This is the time where a person has the oportunity to say "I do not want to have this baby". The belief that the embryo at this stage has any kind of "rights" is only an ideal, one that does not help to reach a rational conclusion. Abortion should not be considered wrong until the fetus is something close to alive. And no, there is no definite line, but all cases should be looked at individually rather than having a catch-all rule. In response to that news item, here I think abortion should be considered an acceptable option. If a child's life is going to be only a few years long, and is going involve nothing but suffering for all concerned (especially the child), the "right-to-life" argument holds little weight.
