Conservative Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper came to my city yesterday and delivered a speech about cutting down on crime, which included plans to raise the age of sexual consent from 14 to 16, so as to protect kids from sexual predators and to be more on par with other countries, including our neighbours, the US. Personally, I'm not sure how I feel about this, as while 14 is quite young, this is really a parenting decision (of course, I'm sure most parents wouldn't be big on their kids having sex at 14). Myself, I personally don't think I would be big on it, but I'm not sure how effective the age of consentual sex would be against sexual predators, and I'm not sure 14 is too young to have a mature relationship for some. In such a case, I'm not sure to what extent the law should be involved, but because it is, it should be broad. This is an easier one for parents (than say, monitoring what your children watch on television or making sure they don't smoke), because usually the question is, where is your kid sleeping at night? So right now, because of those reasons, I think 14 is fine and prefer it, but I'm not strongly opposed to 16 either. Bottom line, I think the law should be broad, and I think that parents should sort this sort of thing out.
EON - I'd agree with you on the fact that 14 is too young, and also the fact that not many can have a mature relationship at that age. I think 16 is a reasonable limit, however. Over here (in the UK) the age is 16. Yet, with it being 16, people have sex as low as 13, 14. So with the age being 14, surely people will be "experimenting" earlier. 18 is the age at which (at least in the UK) we are allowed to drink and buy porn (though we are strangely allowed to have sex at 16) - So you can buy two years after you've done it - Strange. But I'll go with 18 on this one. All in all, i also agree that it is upto the parents of the child. However, with this, some parents wouldn't let their kids get to that position until they got married, others would stick between 16 and 20, and then you would get those that really couldn't give a toss about their kids, and wouldn't care, thus, their kids would be going around at all ages doing it.
I don't see what sexual consent has to do with protecting kids from sexual predators:confused: I like 15.
You can't include 18/19/20/21 in the poll;)

Haha I wouldn't be surprised if I saw a 21. It always bugged me in high school the when 15/16 year old girls I went with would be dating those 18+ guys. I think two things are responsable for this: the first and most important factor being that there is definitely some novelty to dating a 20-year-old as an 11th grade girl, and the second is that most 15/16 year old girls are more mature than 15/16 year old guys. Either way, I think that a real, consentual relationship is possible between a 14-year-old and an 18-year-old (albeit rare). Should the 18 year old be arrested? I think the 18-years-old is too high for the legal limit, doesn't realistically give much space, and is hard to enforce. A 17 year-old and an 18-year-old not being allowed to have sex?
It's 15 in both Denmark and Sweden. And that includes sex between all sexes

It could never be. At least here.

NO way and YES way!
A 17 year-old and an 18-year-old not being allowed to have sex?
That is a grey area and is usually not enforced ;)
Over here in the UK, the age for sodomy is 18, as I understand it. There are apparently medical reasons why.
Meadow There are apparently medical reasons why.
understandably why. Yuk.
I think it should be 14, but 16 is fine too.
