Have you noticed that in any discussion, be it here, on the news, in politics, or anywhere any discussion of a current military conflict invariably brings up WWII comparisons? Every discussion of the War on Terror can be boiled down in a nutshell: Person A: We need to have a middle eastern adventure to defeat the terrorists Person B: I don't think we should be suffering casualties and spending billions to defeat guys riding camels in the desert Person A: You don't support our troops. Person B: I do, which is why I don't want them dying for no good reason. Person A: You're in favor of appeasement... just like Chamberlain appeased Hitler! Person B: Huh waht? Person A: You heard me! If we don't send our entire military force to fight the guys wearing towels on their heads and wearing flip flops they'll take over the world... just like Hitler! Person B: You lost me... Has anyone else noticed this? Why is it that every war, regardless of context, must be compared to WWII? Even if it has absolutely no resemblance whatsoever to WWII?

Because it's the same crap "History"

And your person A's first statement is ridiculous.

Nobody thinks like that.

I would give the reps a little bit more credit then that though...

But in anycase, if you (for)see a situation which you feel rather emotional about it might work to exaggerate a "little". To make a mountain out of a molehill , those who share your view might draw more strenght from it, believing that they are doing really good and just. And it may convert some people sitting on the fence. Though at the cost of polarising those with other (opposing) views.

Are you saying you don't support our troops? :Puzzled:

/sarcasm

We probably should have just let the Soviets take over Afghanistan, then we might not have had this problem to begin with.

So you see it as a deliberate "trick", if you will, to get people to your side... As opposed to an actual belief system? I think this people aren't just saying that... they actually believe that Muslim terrorists sitting in caves are just like the Nazis in WWII. Why else would we be in an absurd, expensive war against guys who like to fuck sheep?

Then again why not just let them bomb whoever they please ?. All they have is sticks and stones, few slingshots, and they should get away with bombs since they are so oppressed from EVERYONE ELSE .

A bit of both seems to be more likely, they forsee that something might turn (even) worse. Possibly overestimating the scale of the problem/risk levels and/or underestimating the effort required to "fix" it. And then when campaigning for something that could be a big problem, exaggerate some, to make other people see the seriousness of the issue at hand.

Pretty much any comparisons to Hitler are bankrupt. People do it so often that it's meaningless, like the boy who cried wolf. If people start comparing things to Hitler just throw it back at them and say stuff like "Hitler wore shoes. How can you trust anybody that also wears shoes?".

Godwin's Law.

Also, have you ever noticed how people that hate WWII analogies act like total Nazis about it? =p
