Discuss. Where is all this money going? Social security, money that we Americans take out of our pocket to put into government hands so they can give it back to us when we retire, is disappearing. Basically, our money is being stolen. How do you guys explain this? I find it to be bull. We shouldn't have a problem with social security, but it turns out that the money in social security is being used to fund programs Bush could fund without the money. The Iraq war for instance. He used the surplus for that as well. I want this thread to be mostly about social security. It is a big issue in America right now. Bush is trying to totally reform the system that he pretty much screwed up in the first place. I don't want this topic to be locked because of too much anti-Bush. Just stick to the main issue, social security. I want to know more about it, and what is happening to it.

Well, the problem isn't just that SS funds are improperly used, but also that population is increasing faster than the current work force can afford to pay for with SS. Once the Baby Boomers hit retirement age, they will probably use up whatever money is left in the fund, if there's even enough to go around.

I think SS has some major conceptual problems. It should have been slowly phased out after it served its purpose (helping the US to recover from the Great Depression). It was never meant to be a huge entitlement program, just some extra money to help people get along after retirement. If I remember correctly, SS is the #1 largest item on our national budget! The problem is that the older demographic is the one with the highest voting rate, so politicians always kowtow to the oldsters. If the younger generations would start voting more, we might get some changes made in our favor. Until then, old people will just keep increasing their returns from SS, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.

I think privitization of SS, but with certain govt regulations should happen. Make it kind of like a bank, where they cannot lose all of your money, or spend it.

Or what should be done is to make Social Secuity optional, and allow people to choose between SS and a private mutual fund.
