Fellow Members,

Over the past few weeks and months, I have noticed a change in the atmosphere of the Pub. Increasingly, I'm seeing good and interesting debates degenerate into two sided brawls. Mostly, this is over who's facts are right, or at least, who's facts are the rightest. No source will ever, ever, be 100% unbiased. This is because we are not robots, everyone who writes anything carries a bias with them. To see an interesting debate get mired in "j00 r teh biasxx0r" style posts makes me sad and angry. It is choking the Pub, and it makes me wonder why I spend time here. I want to read and to write interesting debates. I don't want to see childish fighting.

Therefore, I have a proposition. Even if you do not like this idea, please take into account the first part, as it is the most important.

My proposition is that when dealing with factual arguements, we take the middle ground between two extreme views. If wifebeaters.com says "0" and femenazis.org says "100", then lets us have the civility to call it "50" and continue the debate. This will never give exactly the answer, but it will avoid pages and pages of fighting over whether one side is less biased than the other. We are not here to win a battle, we're here to have an exchange of ideas.

Thank you, masked_marsoe

That is certainly needed, I think this proposition is good. I'll accept it and try to follow it as good as I can.

I try and not brawl with people, but sometimes I let it all go. An example of this is Abortion. I refuse to quit fighting with someone over it because I have a very stong conviction aganist it. Fight for what you belive in.

Just excanging ideas and letting it go at that kills all the threads in her after 4 days since everyone will put in their views and leave it like that. A debate/argument is ok and it gives people the oppturnity to bring out stonger points and explain more fully why they have their views. The arguing over wether the site is biased is stupid. All sites have some bias towards one side.

Although I appreciate your concern, and agree with the thought behind it, the idea you are putting forth I can't support. There are unbiased sources out there, what we need to do is agree on using them. Or at least balancing a biased source with another biased source. Fox News is fine so long as you use CNN too, for example.

I've noticed, too, that the Melee is getting more like the Pub and the Pub more like the Melee recently. Still, as USMA said, if I'm arguing with a stubborn person on something that I believe ardently about, a 50-50 compromise will not satisfy me.

I think I understand what your saying marsoe. Your saying that we must consider both ends of the spectrum and what's in the middle?

People tend to defend their ideas to the death. Or not at all.

Good post Marsoe. But what annoys me the most is when someone doesn't give a source at all. If I make a claim that I know people will dispute I always looks for a source before I post.
