I was wondering why nations like the US and some Europeon nations with nukes still have them. I mean the US is spending so much money on mantaining these nukes and parts are so hard to find (Orginal parts have long been used up. Now we are using parts that fit.). Then there is the fact that most nuclear weapons we have are not reliable (Most nuclear crews aren't 100% sure that there nuke would be ready to launch, nontheless even explode).

I mean a nation like the US has enough capablity now that it could really mess up any nation that tried to nuke it (Even without nukes to strike back). We might not be able to use MAD on them, but the nations would be unable to take advantage of nuking us with all of the crusie missiles, JADAMS, planes, boats, etc. we have.

So my question to you is do we need nukes anymore?

Yes, the only way we're ever going to have even a semblance of peace among major powers is if they've all got guns against each others' heads.

Conidering the UN can't do squat aganist countires like North Korea and Iran, we should have more of them. The only thing these people will understand is violence. If we have a nuke that can get people who are in a bunker 1,000 feet underground then they won't try and fight us.

It's all about backing-up and threatening.

America has nuclear weapons so it can threatens other countries, which would think twice about actions like bombing America. Strange how peace comes with weapons, or fear.

There probably the only weapons we have capable of diverting the likes of asteroids.

and perhaps one day unfriendly aliens come along, we'll need them then.

Look at the cold war. I think it's the longest period of peace in the 20th century. Nuclear warfare has kept conventional warfare to a minimum. It's also interesting to note that the only countries attacked since WWII are ones without nuclear weaponry.

Nukes are not really needed anymore cause people relize what will happen if we use them. If one person uses them then everyone else will think that they can use them. It is not country verses country anymore. We dont need to wipe a country of the face of the earth anymore. We now fight wars agianst small groups that work in many diffrent countrys making the bomb useless.

You forget that the real beauty behind Nuclear Weapons is the threat of their use. You don't nuke somebody because you'll be nuked back. Harder. That's warfare maths.

Yes, but they should be regulated and useful, not killing machines.

Nuclear weapons just sit around year in and year out in reinforced underground tubes. The only thing I can see nukes being good for is being dismantled and used to fuel civillan reactors for power. The age of the nuke is over, now it's the age of stealthy precison strikes.
