Depends on the life threateningness of the situation.

If you have Jack Bauer about, then no, karate isnt going to help you one single itty bit.

So this guy would do a Matrix? Also I think Karate would help you in a life threatening situtation, because if it didn't why would anyone practice it?

Hmm..

Well, in the imaginative incident you said; karate will have no use. There is no to little thing a martial arts/ fight sport can do against guns (only in Hollywood!). However, against a baseball bat or sharp object is questionable. Once swinging, it might be hard to actually stop it, but from what I know, you are more likely to avoid it (and then attack). Also, with karate/martial arts you do get to learn how to fight. So yeah, it will help you a bit when you get into a fight.

But will it help you in a life threatening situation? No. It won't do anything against guns or whatever.

Really? You'd rather stand there and have your head take the baseball bat? Let's get some sense of reality here shall we. -- If someone swings a bat at your head it's going to do a lot of damage, if however you stop that before it hits your head it's going to do less damage.

Martial arts does not make someone invincible, there are some forms of Karate that are simply for show, it can however help you a lot by providing lots of options in a situation so you have some idea of what to do, by making you familiar with fighting and how it feels to be hit. Things like that which when it comes down to it and you're facing some chav with a knife who doesn't really know what he's doing, can make the difference between calling an ambulance for him and lying in the gutter bleeding to death.

Is it useless? No, it might save your life, or your health - most people after all don't know shit about fighting, even the ones that think they're 'well 'ard.'

SpaZyi used to do karate for about 2 years, they always said that the moves they tought me would help me in a real situation, then i relized what the hell, this si not gonna do nothing for me. so i stoped.

The greatest thing you can learn from martial arts isn't the fighting itself. It's the self-control, the focus and the discipline that you gain in the process of a 'real' training course. That's what will save your life when you're in real danger. With their lives in real danger, most people will forget such things as they stop thinking and start acting on instinct, with adrenaline flooding through their system. The ability to focus throughout that is what will make the biggest difference of all.

They tought me this move to block a Baseball bat But what is actually gonan sop a baseball bat when a guy swings it at you, they said i could block it with my arm, My arm would obviously brake.

You're better off nullifying the ability of the baseball bat to actually hit you with any degree of force in the first place, by moving in close to prevent them from taking a swing. Trying to block a solid piece of wood moving at speed is stupid, and backing away from them will only allow them to take an even greater swing and hit you with more force.

well anyway now i have a friend who does karate and he thinks hes a absalute master cause he does it. (hes a white belt) ( i got up to red) So hes became a prick lately and i told him that some 1 wants to fight him. he said okay, i will sue my karate moves. then we got into a descution

Sounds like your friend has been sucked into martial arts culture rather than actual training. His ability to fight isn't an issue in that instance -- as they say, a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. He is likely one of those people who sees martial arts as a mystical thing from a far away land, an impression that is only emphasised by Hollywood and, indeed, Eastern media itself. Sounds to me like he is doing it for bragging rights and not taking it seriously, so he'd likely freeze up like most people.

As for whether martial arts will help you or not, see above. They're completely useless unless you're disciplined enough to use them when it counts. Fighting a student on a soft mat in a safe room with a teacher to make sure it's done properly is completely different than facing the prospect of a knife jammed into your belly. And remember, just because you're trained in a fighting style, that doesn't make you a fighter.

If you have Mr. Bauer around, just grab onto his waste and tell him to fly away. I mean, those things on the side of his head must be wings, they're far too large to be ears after all!

With Karate, or any martial art, a little knowledge can be dangerous. I once had a kid, well early 20's..but a kid to me, tell me that because I was sitting in a wheelchair I was the right height for him to kick my head off my shoulders. After I showed him a .45 and told him he was the right height for me to blow his tiny balls off...he promptly ran away like Forest Gump. If you're gonna use it....study for years, and learn the mental aspect of it also. All the stuff ya see on TV is B.S.
