As muchas I like Ireland and want to visit, NO Ireland is not Atlantis.

Plato said that Atlantis lay just beyond the Pillars of Hercules. This was a knickname the Greeks used for the two mountains on either side of the Straights of Gibraltar. I do not doubt that the Greeks may have known about Britain and Ireland.

They said beyond the pillers of hercules....

But some believe he was talking about the Mionan Civilization on Thera that existed ages earlier...

Anybody ever play the old game Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis?

That game was and still the best...I wish Lucasarts would re-realase it so it would work on modern systems.....no game will ever be better than that game, unless its a 3d Version...

The game is about 10 years old, its a 2-D walkthru...but it kicks ass

I dont see why the scientist thinks its Ireland...because wasnt Atlantis supposedly lost under the ocean?

SOme people say that when Thera exploded, it destroyed atlantis....and I heard from others...The Atlanteans had a utopian society...3 concentric circles, one of bronze, one of gold (I believe), and one of a mysictal metal, called 'orichalcum' (or-a-cal-cum), supposedly a metal made from the 4 elements of earth (earth, wind, fire, and water)....(using lava)

well, the atlanteans, in an effort to make themselvels like gods, created a machine that would turn them into gods....but something went wrong, and the machine destroyed the city of atlantis

or thats how the myth goes

well mabey there is no such place as Atlantis....

Plato was a philospher, so mabey he created atlantis to show his idea for a utopian society...

Come on guys, its History, You will never know the truth... Plato was probably on drugs thinking about Alantis and picked Ireland... lol But seriously... It could be true that Ireland is Alantis because of the size of it (200 miles wide 300 miles long)... I dont know, we will never know the truth...

but speculation is kinda fun....

I dont think Ireland would be it because its too far north

And is Atlantis a city or continent? People say its a continent but if you read details, it talks about the 3 concentric circles...so the circles would be damn big

To say that Plato created Atlantis for his utopic society is utter nonsense, since 1. Atlantis doesn't represent the ideas Plato had for an ideal civilization 2. he wrote about his utopia in 'the republic'. Why write about it again? He - if he's not lying - got the story from Egyptian priests. Maybe they had made it up?

Don't you think we would've found some remains of an ancient civilization on the islaand, if it really was atlantis?
