Bill Could Criminalize Fast-Forwarding DVD Ads, Trailers
POSTED: 4:05 pm EST November 18, 2004
A new bill before Congress may eventually have DVD-viewers thinking twice before fast-forwarding through the ads and previews. The proposed legislation would make fast-forwarding through those ads illegal -- not only in theaters, but also at home, NBC News reported. The bill allows technology that lets families edit out explicit scenes or material to track the DVD use. But broadcast companies have lobbied hard to keep commercials and movie trailers off limits. "Their concern is if it becomes easy for people to skip ads, then their whole business model goes down the drain," said Gigi Sohn, of a consumer advocacy group called Public Knowledge.Public Knowledge is fighting the bill and Sohn said families have been skipping ads ever since the early days of the VCR.Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, agreed, saying: "Do we really expect to throw people in jail for behavior they've been engaged in for more than a quarter century?"Media executives said that's not their goal. The Motion Picture Association said it supports other parts of the act, "particularly those provisions that will help combat the theft of motion pictures," NBC News reported.

I do hope that this does not become a law. Otherwise, I doubt that I will abide by it. :vikki:
Oh. My. Fucking. God.
You just screwed up my morning Bobo.
It is the whole principle of this that just pisses me off. America is going down a fucking toilet, and here is proof. Laws and rules like this are continuing to get passed by stupid morons looking for some cash. I find this to be one of the dumbest things I have ever read.
wtf? Jesus, next they'll be placing camera's in our homes. Skipping Commercials? Don't they have bigger fish to fry?
fuck that bill!!! if that thing gets passed, i'm seeriously gonna leave the country. the country is going down the toilet. damn!!!
I'm way cooler than n0e (who isn't though?)

you pay for a dvd to see the movie not the ads , including the ads should be made illegal :nodding:
Well, we shall see if corperate America runs our lives instead of congress. They already do this in some DVD's in regard to the FBI warning et. al., but commercials? I guess they are sore after the TiVo success. I'm already irritated by the commercials in the movie theaters, but this will be too far.
Freedom of speach does not require someone to listen, so they better not pull any Constitutionality into this.
One of the advantage of DVDs over video cassettes was the abilty to fast forward trailers before a film with ease. This defeats the whole pupose...
Imagine it in prison, you're in the cell next to a mass murderer and he asks what you're doing in there. You reply 'I fastforwarded an advert'....
I'm lying when I say trust me

This is obviously extremely fucking stupid. We have better things to do than watch previews for shit movies for 20 minutes before what we paid for can be watched. There is no way they can enforce this. People will just skip it all anyway. America is getting more retarded by the day. :vikki:
