I saw Excession's avatar... image.php?u=74709&dateline=1091784990 and it made me start thinking, Black Holes. Do they exist? Do they really have so strong a gravitational pull that not even light could escape? I think that they do exist because I've heard of scientists saying that they've spotted some. What are y'all's opinions.:D

Yes, they do... Not much you can debate on this one...

So don't debate it... state your opinion... as he asks... you don't have to debate everything in here, y'know, it's just the place that you can debate things if you want to.

I think they exist. They're just so hard to find (what with light not escaping from them). They're just hard to imagine. For instance, where do they go? Possibly nowhere... but the human mind has trouble comprehending nowhere, so I keep thinking it must go somewhere... I think they took some images of what they think is a blackhole. Either that or it was a wormhole. I might look for them when I get home.

They do exist yes, theyre gravitational pull is immense.

The only way to spot them, obviously only using a super powered telscope, and spot light "bending" as it passes around the black hole (Although that is very little as light is even sucked into them).

Heres a scary thought :p :

There are millions in the universe, and if just one were to pass too close to our Solar system, basically we are f*****. :(

they cant see them because not even light can escape but they know that they exist because of radio waves... so the picture isnt real, but black holes are real

They exist, but we can only kno so much because of their gravitational pull....

And to put a stop to the rumor about black holes sucking in whole systems....yes the holes have immense gravity, but they cant suck in whole planets unless the planet is very close, and the planet would be broken up anyway.

Its also interesting, because, in theroy, a black hole sucks in time as well. Time inside the hole slows down, but the time outside is normal.

so if that theory is true then time travel must also be true?

well mabey, but you have to find a way to do it.....

But its the gravitational forces that alter time...so mabey time travel could happen, but you would have to find some way of doing it.

I wonder what would happen if u entered a black hole at the speed of light. Could you mabey go thru it? Like is there an out of a black hole? Could a quasar be the other end of a black hole?

Black Holes exist, but according to some new theories of Hawking, they aren't capable of transporting people to another place (as in: a white hole). Black Holes can be spotted, thanks to radiowaves, or stuff that is being sucked in them. As for Emerics 'time travel', time slows, so - IF YOU COULD GET OUT of the hole later - you could 'travel' to the further, but not to the past. In the center of a black hole, where mass reaches enormous numbers, getting close to 00, time should - infact - stand still...

So you are saying it's like a time machine, but it can only go forward?
