Well, this just dawned on me.

I do have graduation money, quite a bit of it actually. Perhaps now I can invest in a purpose-built gaming computer, or build my own. So I guess either way this time I win.

Well, better say this now than never. :) Good luck USMA. I'll be missing you, it will be a bit quiet once you leave. Hope in makes out for you. Whenever I want to discuss shall we say, Republican policies in a thread, you're the best opposition. If I may call you that. ;) Oh and if you get sent to Iraq. If you ever see a Saddam loyalist running aroundwith a gun. Put a bullet in him for me, one for my father, one for my aunt in Baghdad and about 23-25 more for the rest of my Persian relatives. :D

Stick it in a Cd or in some bonds, think with a bond you are paying for your own equipment:p

That is great to see that you can go to west point. One kid at my school is going to the naval academy after he graduates(he has all the requirments for it)

USMA, I look foward to the day when we see you wearing five stars on your shoulders. Though your enlistment has been delayed, I still consider it an honor to know any person who is, or one day will become, a soldier. Any man, who fights so that the Stars and Stripes can keep flying high and proud, and fights to protect all that we hold sacred, deserves the total respect of every single American citizen. And indeed, you have earned mine. :salute:

Good luck with your endeavours, and I'm glad you got postponed. Hope you get put to humanitarian duties, instead of "shooting first, asking questions later". I hope you don't asking about why you shot a 45 year old woman, because they got the ID wrong. I'm glad to hear you can fire an M16, I just hope that you can stand the sight of mutilated bodies, cries of pain and seeing someone the second they lose there life. I hope you don't get PTSD, because apparently war's a nasty business. Don't let anyone see you cry yourself to sleep the first few nights. The army is a very honorable profession, and I like what they're about, but the politics of it all just don't make it a very good time to join. Not to say that the insurgency in Iraq isn't terrorism and that they're not killing their own people who DO want freedom, I just think it's an illegal war and it wasn't worth stirring up the hornet's nest in the first place. Maybe you'll get lucky, and after Iraq is done, there will be a lull in US military action. Anyways, I'm not trying to flame anyone, I'm just trying to say why I think you are lucky you've been postponed, but basically, good luck, and don't get blowed up/blow up anyone who doesn't deserve to get blowed up. Maybe asking questions first is better-- I'm sure you would prefer the courtesy of being asked the question first, and then shot. Remember, a life is a life, their life is as significant as your life at a basic level, if you die, that's it-- everything you've ever done doesn't even matter anymore because you'll be dead.

I too hope you will get in eventually, it really would be useful to know the realities of those you'll be commanding. Stupid of them trying to stop you in first place, but stupidity is one of the characteristics of military bureaucracy, so you probably would have noticed that sooner or later anyway.

BTW, I got an off-topic question for you, what is the team that usually follows the platoon leader around and takes care of artillery support and communications called in English? This has been bothering me since last year, and I haven't found the correct words yet. :p

Anyway, as a little hint if you will get in, at least here the normal assault rifle-grunts get the most comfortable equipment, or in other words, their equipment isn't that heavy and cumbersome, not to mention it usually doesn't try to strangle you. It might not be as cool as carrying a mg, AT weapons, mortar or radio, but it saves your back...

About mastering the M16, just remember that it isn't all about getting the perfect shot, spending half a minute on getting the sights perfectly aligned, nor spraying around, but to be the one who shoots the first bullet that hits the target. (Some people actually have problems understanding this.)

And I don't know about the customs in the US army, nor the design of the M16, but if you are supposed to have it behind your head when sleeping and you don't have a cushion, put your rubber boots on the rifle and the perfect cushion is born. (I did fall asleep infront of our platoons training officer whilst waiting in order giving-formation though, so I'm not sure if it works for everyone. :lookaround: )
