During war, there really are no rules or morals.

That's why it is so terrible.

Sure we have Geneva and such, but when it comes down to it, especially when you are fighting a Middle-Eastern enemy that's not as civilized, you will have innocent casualties.

So IMO as long as civillians aren't primary targets, their killing is not immoral because it will happen in every conflict.

Well thats stupid. So what happens if a lunatic gets to become an officer. He orders all of his men to go on a suicide mission. Under your policy they have to do that as death awaits them either way. They cannot complain as they were ordered to do so. Stupid

Lunatics rarely get very far in the chain of command, they get weeded out quickly. Secondly, there IS a chain of command, if you platoon leader makes a shiatty decision, its the job of platoon vice leadership to either A-inform him of that and suggest alternatives B-practice tactical fluidity and MAKE it work.

Most commands are open ended in the US military. You get an objective and your free to use personal intiative to accomplish that mission. Its called Commanders Intent. The order could be "Take control of that Building" That doesnt mean run up the center street and get hosed but to use all methods at your disposal to accomplish the intended mission whether it be destroying the whole building outright via airstrike or firing it up from a distance and moving in troops to flank and seize it.

Overall though, the business of a soldier is killing and if he aint good at that business he might want to get another profession.

How does a soldier know whos innocent? In Iraq, anyone could be the enemy: a cellphone can trigger a bomb, a guy who waves at you one moment can shott you with an AK-47 next, a relgious building could be an armory, any good man could mistake an innocent civilian for a target of deception.

Those in control are not always right, and it is a person's duty to be loyal to humanity first, their leaders second. I believe in following orders, but I don't believe in committing mass murder just because someone tells you to do it. A mission meant to kill innocents for the purpose of killing innocents, for reasons other than the lives or freedoms of greater ammounts of innocents, is not a mission that a man should undertake and expect to come away moraly clean from. I hold the people that ran and designed the gas chambers of Nazi Germany and crematoriums reponsible for the results of their actions, no greater good was to be had in their further service, they did it because either they didn't care why, or they supported the why.
