moofThat's been happening since the dawn of time. The biggest reason for the corruption of modern society is this: Business has taken rebellion, edginess, and the counterculture and has harnessed them to make a profit. They push sex, drugs, and rock n' roll to sell everything from dishwashers to childrens' toys to ice cream. This has made American pop culture, the product of these businesses, decadent and morally damaged. The reaction from this, epitomized by the Christian Coalition, promises a return to traditional values. Problem is, hidden behind the smut and filth is a wealth of societal advances in equal rights, social justice, and environmental stwewardship. Somebody who can afford to take the heat needs to step in and separate the slag from the steel. Question is, who?

Very good points. Corporations hire teams of psychologists to examine a target demographic, tap into its fears, and especially its desires. Sex sells, so there's tits and ass everywhere. Certain colors grab our attention, catchy smart-ass slogans, explosions and neato sound bites. Our strings are being pulled constantly, the more we're exposed to it. Luckily, I'm in a fading demographic for most of it--plus, I don't watch TV and I like being a hermit, so it doesn't bother me that much. But most of this junk is directed at kids...who are always a future market. It seems almost like an assault on our senses...we're incredibly overstimulated; maw and paw farmer a hundred years ago were never exposed to this crap...life was simple and slow-paced, populations were smaller, multi-media consisted of a newspaper, a radio, and gossip at the local store. Maybe the term "Future shock" or "culture shock" applies...or even "greedy consumerism shock." duffman108, I agree that discipline has gone down the toilet. And I think the anti-spanking thing has gone too far; I think it's okay as a last resort, but not an angry, reflex action. Good point about the "don't do it" stuff...I never understood the logic in that; repeatedly telling them to not do something only makes them want to do it more. Hardly anything gives a sensible reason why it shouldn't be done. And rarely do you see something like, "It is better to do this, and here is why...." It's all negatives, no positives.

A fine post, Nordicvs. A lot of kids have just become genreally screwed up because th entire world has bombarded them with messages that never promote, and are usually detrimental to a healthy psyche. The rule is, win quick, screw everybody else, and buy buy buy!

!moofWhat's wrong with people trying to change their sex? How does that hurt anyone? My point is, sex, titillation, and novelty sells. So the business world is selling us sex, titillation, and the latest fad, and we're buying.

Whats wrong with it, its unatural. Your born a boy or a girl so stay that way. If you feel like your women then theres somthing wrong with you. And also who would want to have sex with some one that use to be a man? Not me.

Yes you guys above have (in my opinion) hit the nail on the head. Kids are being bombarded with messages from the media. But they are also being told the exact opposite by their parents. The kids are curious and although their parents say don't do it, the media says its fun. So the kids listen to the argument that sounds like it will please them. Which is generally the media.

Duffman, you may find it unnatural. That is your right. But how is it hurting you for them to be transgendered?

I agree, it's sick, but they have a right to do it if that floats their boat. Actually, it's not hurting you at all; not until you in fact experience this (the possibility of something happening does not harm you, just the act itself). Trust me. I've had an experience with being decieved this way, and I grew furious at all gays, especially those who change their sexes, and *especially* those who deceive others into believing that they're not the real gender you thought they were, lying about why they have certain scars, et cetera. Before that I had nothing against gays and was supportive of their rights; even though we just went out a few times, and thankfully I wasn't in love with her/it/whatever, it took years to get over it, and even now I'm bitter and biased.

Anyway, had she/he/it been up front with me, I would not have suffered at all--I would have said, See ya, I'm looking for a woman, i.e. a real woman. And that would have been that. It's the intentional deception that hurts.

Then don't date transgendered individuals, duffman! If they are up front about it, avoid them. If they aren't then they are sad, sick people and they need more than a sex change. Is it fair for people to be denied sex changes in order to prevent you from accidentally falling in love with a former dude? Jeez, ego trip.
