For the past several years I have always had a problem with school. I'd know the material very well, better than most kids, yet I wouldn't get the grades to prove that. My teachers knew I was smart and I knew I was too but I never had a reason why I couldn't perform as good as I should! So last week I went to a therapist regarding this matter and she concluded that I may have a serious problem with my executive functioning. Executive functioning basically the method in which you organize your thoughts and apply them to the "real world" to solve various problems. Whe your thoughts are not organized, you cannot use them as efficiently. An example I like to refer to is : you are placed in a small room, you are asked to organize it, there are clothes (represents thoughts) all over the place, you have no hangers or shelves. In my case, I would take the "clothes" and just toss them in one big pile while a typical person would 'fold" them and categorize them to organize the room.

My point is that I was wondering if anyone has a similar problem with their "Executive Functioning" or know someone who has a similar problem .If they do Id like to know how they fixed it if they can.

I also have the problems that the grades I get in tests usually don't show how much I studied or know about a subject. I think the reason is a mixture of luck and how nervous I am during the test.

If this therapist found out what your problem is shouldn't she be able to tell you how to solve this?

No I was told to read about it on the net and stuff to get my confirmation whether or not it was an executive function problem.

hey man I am exactly in the same boat. I know more than the average kid in my grade level. When doing normal work I excel and do pretty good. When it comes test time I just cant do it for some reason. which is probably what this executive functioning thing is.... Id like to fix my problem as well. Ive never figuered it out man.

My grades are usually half As and half Bs and Cs. and osmetimes the grade fluctuates in the same class..A in one quarter, a B or C the next.. :\ I will look into this as well.

Its funny because I actually had reading problems in 1st and 2nd grade but I went to some reading help class sponsored by the school and I was told that I'm "cured". Hell I remember spelling of "ov" on a first grade test and I felt so bad I cried to my grandma, hahaha!
