Really.

When was the last time you used gay refering to a homosexual? It has essentially been watered down and widened to mean anything.

really it's the f-word of insults, without the profanity.

i get owned from accross the map by a sniper, first word to come out of my mouth? "Gaaaaaaaaay." Was the shot homosexual?

My point being, Gay is now closer to calling someone (or something) stupid.

Now that I think about it, it would all come down to context.

Much like "Fuck" could be used in it's literal term or in a million other ways, gay can be used in the same way.

Comments?

I agree with you that there has been a certain cultural 'watering down' of the term (as is normal; that tends to happen to any slur over time), but I disagree with you in that it still does have a very strong meaning. While not as vicious as the word 'fag,' 'gay' can still contextually be a hurtful thing to say. See, the majority of us perceive the word 'gay' to mean stupid, mostly because we are heterosexual. Imagine someone calling a white person the 'N-word,' it's the same type of idea. The white person would sooner think that person was being an idiot than be offended. However, a black person would be very offended. Same thing with 'gay.' If someone called me gay, I would laugh it off because I know (very, very, very certain :naughty: ) that I am not gay. However, calling a gay person 'gay' in the wrong tone of voice, or even just casually, might be pretty hurtful...

It then falls back into context, the wrong tone of voice could turn a lot of things into very vicious fights.

I've called gay people gay, and they could care less. Faggot on the other hand, is a very different story.

It didn't mean homosexual to begin with.

When was the last time you used gay referring to happy, you know, what it meant originally?

:lookaround:.

Have you never herd the christmas carol "deck the halls"? Its an old one that uses the word gay to mean happy.

Nearly every degatory or curse word has some other meaning. It was just made a cuse word since nobility and the rich heard the poor people using those words. The rich and noble hated those words and deemed them curse words.

several words have changed meaning drastically , take the word "crap" a short version of crapper, crapper was taken from the last name of the person that invented the sanitary toilet, Thomas Crapper. of course now crap in the american lexicon stands for rubbish or excrement.

Very true. The "watering down" only affects some words. Even now, after the sexual liberation, women are encouraged to sleep around like unpaid whores, but they get really angry if you call them a slut. I think that word has more meaning than ever. The woman knows she is a slut, which makes the insult even worse.
