From what I know aging has a lot to do with ravelling ends of the DNA. Every time your DNA replicates, part of it at the end is lost. There is an enzyme that will actually repair and rebuild these caps. However the question then is if we replicate this enzyme and use it, how will it affect the human body? It could slow/end aging, however it could also have negative effects (ie cells replicating out of control, cancer). It's a double-edged sword.

1. They would have to control the birth rate (or even stop it almost completely)) if we don't want to risk overpopulation (in a VERY short time) 2. It is possible that the process of becoming immortal would be very costly (like, pay a million and be immortal!). Thus there would be a very rich immortal class and a poor mortal class. 3. I doubt it will be possible, i've seen something about it in biology and i doubt it can happen (i don't remember the details tho). Besides, you can still catch diseases and you can still have a car accident. 4. You will get bored, eventually, or start being mad. 5. The religious freaks will probably try to burn you to the stake :D

Indeed. At the end of the chromosomes are particular pieces of DNA called the telomeres. On each replication a bit of these telomeres is lost, but most of it is replaced by the enzyme telomerase. The idea of immortality is a bit scary though. Our earth is already overpopulated and with genetic therapies available that can make you immortal, that is not a good combination. Ofcourse, I understand this will only be available for very rich people, but then, can you really put a pricetag on eternal life???

Sure, i'd like to be immortal myself.. But this isn't possible, do you realize the problems that this would bring to the world and to the human race?
