ok i'm just going to try to let some steam off right now. Ok so me and may friend both referee hockey. This week end he has 6 games to referee and i have 2 (the average to referee is about 2-3a weekend) so he got a call about this game gets 25 bucks for doing it and he was not sure if he could do it our not so i ask him if i can do it for him since i have passed him about 5 games in the the last 2 weeks. Right after i say this he says NO and says how much he needs the money. This is after he broke my xbox (wire broke) which i have to pay to get repaired with my money. grrr what do you guys think of this?

He broke it, he should pay for it. That's a sure thing.

However, what does he need the money for? To go out, buy games and things like that? Or for actual things you need, like rent and food?

Is it a real expensive fix, or are you set with like $20? If it's expensive, demand he pays the cost then. He broke it, he has spare money, he should fix the thing. Both ethically and by law. If he refuses, talk to your or his parents.

You're better off without people who refuse to take their responcibility anyway.

Friend huh? Sounds like the kind of person who doesn’t have much respect for you or your property. Suggest he own up and do what a friend should do, or may be you should start distancing yourself, because true friends shouldn't treat you like that.

Destroying to get back at him isn't an option. A friend, well basically everybody should pay for something the destroy or damage that isn't their propertity. If it was an accident it's the owner's choice to "forgive them". If my friend or some random Joe would accidently knock something of a table I might not demand to be compensated.

If it was an accident the person who broke the thing can always go to his/her insurance. Though I doubt your friend has any.

In short, he probably should pay. And real friends, well any normal person should ask you if you want them to compensate you in the first place... "Sorry dude I just broke your X/Y/Z, what do I own you?"
