So... another one of those "big questions". How long has humanity (as we know it) existed? We know that we've been around for at least 2006 years. And then we must have been around for a fairly long time before that to have had what we did then. Now if you think what we had back then, mostly fortresses and sucklike, depending on where you came from (Egypt had Pyramids). But civilisation had to be roaming long before then, in order for people to be able to construct things, wear (and create) clothes, decide that money would mean something, and whatever else. I'm just curious as to how long we've been around. Of course, I don't expect anyone to give a date as to when we suddenly sprang out of nowhere, but how far (from our knowlege) do we actually go back? Now, from the Bibles point of view, God created Adam & Eve (who obviously forgot all about him) - I can't quite work out why God needed to send his Son to Earth and "remind" people that he exists, unless Adam & Eve, and those that came after them simply "forgot". - That is only providing that all this is true. If it isn't, then we still have a long time of people walking around before Jesus came along. I can't remember for the life of me when or where I read it, but it was said some place that Jesus did actually exist. Whether he was the son of God is a completely different matter, but 200 odd years ago, a man called Jesus would have existed, and would have told stories (which may have turned into the Bible) - I'm not here to debate whether the Bible is Fact or Fiction. I'm just looking at it with an open mind. Now, back 2006 years ago (at the time of Jesus) - regardless of whether the Bible is true, something big happened back then, for us to still remember it two millenniums later. But regardless of Jesus and his time, what I am interested in is everything before then. Pre-Jesus era... Let me finish this by saying I don't want another discussion on whether or not God exists etc. That isn't the point in this thread.

I found this on wikipedia According to scientific research of two skulls of Homo sapiens we found in 1967, we (the human race) began our existence aproximatly 195.000 years ago as bipedal moving ape-like creatures. We were a evolutionairy step ahead of the human-ape. We began to hunt on animals for food and "primitive clothing" and we began to form groups to insure our survival.

I recon that we have been around (modern man, with farming and such) for 6000-10000 years.

about what the bible says (roughly, i have a bad memory), Adam and Eve sinned and God threw them out of the garden of eden. then, thousands of years later, the world became very evil and Noah built an Ark. then, after another big gap, Abraham became a follower of God and proved to have great faith. Then (I think) two thousand years later, Jesus was born so that sins could be forgiven. (everyone, even Abraham sinned and everyone that sinned would have to go to hell)

I know for fact that humanity has been around for 18 years (my age). The other years are yet to be confirmed. This is all I know for fact.

Humanity as a species (homo sapiens sapiens) has been around for about 35000 years. But earlier humans have been around for far longer. It is a question of what is a human for you (i assumed you meant the modern species).

We didnt just come out of nowhere..

We were hunter/gatherers, it's hard to pin down when monkey became man.. But at one point we started using tools, we were already living in groups, cause monkeys do too. We found we could use furs to keep ourselves warm, clothing was born. Then some bright folks found out that they could actually make the stuff they collected grow in places of their choosing, forcing those that did to settle down.. i believe that is how "towns" were born, these farmers could trade their things for the stuff the hunters had.. and so forth.

It's hard to say "when" we came to be.

Of course, you can just say that man sprang up from the soil with their defunct "fur" and tailbone.. in god's image.. 6000? years ago. ;)

I brought up the Bible because it is in our history. It was God that I asked people not to debate about. - The Bible Exists. - Fact it can be found near enough everywhere. Regardless of what is in the context, the book itself is real. - God *may* Exist. - It has yet to be proven.
We didnt just come out of nowhere.. I feel like posting a thread entitled "how many continents are there" and then answer "2 - that's what the Bible says". But seeing it'd get closed early on (and rightly so:D) and perhaps lead to referrals, it's not worth it.

Let me finish this by saying I don't want another discussion on whether or not God exists etc. That isn't the point in this thread.

- God *may* Exist. - It has yet to be proven.

Now, you of course decide the topic of your own thread, but it'd be nice if you made up your mind.

When did we get here?

The most widely accepted view among current anthropologists is that Homo sapiens originated in the African savanna between 200,000 and 250,000 years ago, descending from Homo erectus, and colonized Eurasia and Oceania by 40,000 years ago, and finally colonized the Americas by 10,000 years ago.[30] They displaced Homo neanderthalensis, Homo floresiensis and other species descended from Homo erectus (which had colonized Eurasia as early as 2 million years ago) through more successful reproduction and competition for resources.

Templeton, Alan (2002). "Out of Africa again and again" Nature 416: 45 - 51. [Wikipedia]

Of course, if you for some reason choose to disregard the evidence brought forth by science for whatever reason, you're never going to know. Your beloved Bible says nothing about when humanity originated, nor will it ever do so, no matter how much you twist and turn its wording.

If this is true, then it is quite bad to think that we've only acomplished "this" in 195.000 years.

Ethical implications or other do not make things less true. It's quite bad to think we've started a world war, yet it still happened. It's bad that we've found ourselves building tens of thousands of atomic bombs, yet sadly we have. And so on forever and ever.

And as a side note, I do not consider what we've achieved up to now to be anything that can be described as "only". Right, we've "only" spread across the whole globe. We've "only" learned how to fly. We've "only" landed on our moon. I could go on and on.

Yes, it's sad that mythologies did not allow science did not gain a real foothold until recently. But in my eyes, we've still accomplished a good deal. At the cost of animal species and the environment, unfortunately:(, but hey, it's still a good deal.

about what the bible says (roughly, i have a bad memory), Adam and Eve sinned and God threw them out of the garden of eden. then, thousands of years later, the world became very evil and Noah built an Ark.

Once again I'm stunned by how certain people can blindly follow the unproven ascertions of the Bible and simultaneously disregard, deny, or otherwise ignore the evidence brought forth by science.

One of countless articles debunking the Ark myth. Another of the countless articles shooting down the myth (scroll to post six). A List Of Biblical Contradictions - a Google search for "Biblical contradictions" yields 794 000 "hits".

The Bible is a treasure, like all written records several millenia old. But its truthfulness is questionable, to say the least.

I know for fact that humanity has been around for 18 years (my age). The other years are yet to be confirmed. This is all I know for fact.

 Brilliant reply.

Yes, I'll have to go with humanity and its civilization and history records springing into existance out of nowhere 21 years ago. Whatever comes earlier has never been observed by me and has negative ethical implications (ie. the world wars really happened), and thus cannot exist. And don't give me BS about history books detailing humans pre-Safe-Keeper Era - it's widely known that there have been instances of history books writers lying, and hence none of the books are valid sources.

The universe started with me:smokin:.
