IAS, Internet Addiction Syndrome or IAD, Internet Addiction Disorder. This is a true event and I would like everybody to read it carefully.

For about 3 months ago my mother recieved a letter from my school telling that I had been away for more than a month, my mother got extremely worried and asked me about it, I lied for about week untill I couldnt take it anymore. It was obvious, I had been away from school, the reason was obvious, I had been away so I could spent my time on the local cybercafe. In the past 6 months I had been pushing my friends away, my family, I skipped parties so I could go home and visit the internet to chat with my "friends".

I went to counculling and they told me to visit a institution for misc. addicted people. After talking about 3 hours with a very nice lady it was obvious for me, I suffered from IAS/IAD.

For 2 years I had been consuming myself on the internet, I got friends yes? But were they true friends? No they were names on the screen. I had no social life, I had no nothing, I skipped my job so I could get to the internet. On a average day I would be online for about 10 hours.

After all I went trough I have now opened up and are ready to speak about it, im fighting it everyday, trying to go online less. I know some people says "oh im certainly not suffering from IAS/AID, but how do you know exactly?", the truth is that you dont know it before someone else notices it. I have tried to describe it to other people that had no idea what I was talking about. The most equal thing I could describe it with was hard-drugs. You become so addicted that you dont know what you are doing. You dont realise that you just spend the entire day in front of the computer when you could have been going out with your friends.

I created this thread because I wanna reveal a sad buy very true story. And this story aint the only one. I read in a danish news-paper that about 40,000 Danish people suffer from it (We are about 6 million in total), and 80,000 are very close to get it. There havent been much focus on it but I believe its time. It have gone out of control, it really have.

I would like to get some responses, comments and other things so we can get this debatted good trough, as its obviously a bigger problem than most people think it is.

I have also copied and translated a checklist to see if your in the dangerzone or you actually are addicted.

Do you use 6 or more hours a day on the PC?

Do you skip certain things such as real-life friends, your job or other things in order to get to your PC?

Do you have a hard time leaving your PC for more days? Vacations or such?

Do you bring your laptop on vacations in order to get online?

Do you actually seem to notice that you got a problem?

Have family/friends ever mentioned that you used too much time on the internet? If so did you react defensive or negative to it?

This is just a few of a huge list, but its obvious, if you match on pretty much all of these you should seek counculling or try to find more information about it and how to fight it.

Sincerly, ZeroTolerance.

I certainly don't have a problem. I even, albeit rarely, take week long breaks from the internet. And I'm barely ever on in the summer, when I have other things to do.

Do you use 6 or more hours a day on the PC? Negative

Do you skip certain things such as real-life friends, your job or other things in order to get to your PC? Heck no

Do you have a hard time leaving your PC for more days? Vacations or such? Not at all

Do you bring your laptop on vacations in order to get online? Nope

Do you actually seem to notice that you got a problem? Nope

Have family ever mentioned that you used too much time on the internet? If so did you react defensive or negative to it? Yes, but only because my mother thought I'd been on the computer all day, when in fact I had been down town and didnt stumble in till 3am. Apparently I was on the internet at home all that time. Shows how much attention she pays to what I do.

Its good to see, but the fact is that the problem is more widespread that people think at 1st.

No. (I use Macs) :P

Absolutly not. If one intends to pay for games and pay the ISP, you need money. Which you get from jobs. When you show up.

Sorta, but I can live without it.

Not to get online. More to do work and entertain myself en route to the vacation. But not really to get online.

No.
