As most of us are aware, high seas pirates are on the rise and in particular Somalian pirates. I am glad to say that at least (and at last) action has been taken in what I seem to be an appropriate manner:
US sea capt. freed from pirates in swift firefight
Navy Seal Snipers = bad ass.
Now, however, pleasure cruise ships are arming themselves not just with non-lethal defenses such as those deafening sound cannons, but with REAL cannons. I'm surprised it takes so long for action to be taken by our governments when there shouldn't be any regards to shooting pirates.
If they think that they can take on the U.S., they are dead wrong.

Will the U.S is seemly taken very small steps to stop this, Sure they killed the 3 holding 1 hostage.......but there are something like 200 other people being held hostage out there.
A very good point and something to be worried about: will revenge be taken out on the remaining hostages?

I highly doubt they would do that, If they started shotting, the Navy would be sent in very fast, Will i hope it would be

I doubt the pirates are organised enough. Besides, they're taking hostages for the money, not for ideological reasons. Dead hostages don't get the pirates nearly so much ransom money as live ones...
You guys both make good points, but according to the pirate who was arrested, they did consider killing the captain and just leaving. Although they wouldn't have gotten far... But don't underestimate just how organized they are. They still don't know exactly who is masterminding all their attacks or if it is or isn't organized...
I saw a documentary on them on the history channel, in fact piracy and terrorism is becoming more of the same thing. Piracy is a actually a golden opportunity for Terrorist organizations mainly because there are 7 choke points of oil passages to the Western countries, some of these, like the Panama Canal, are only a mile wide and would be easy to blockade, therefore sending our economies tumbling and not rich enough to finance the war overseas.
That would be by far there greatest hope of destroying the Western World.
It's not feasible, though. If a group of terrorists/pirates directly threaten a US lifeline, it would be considered a direct attack upon the US and result in a very swift response; in this case from the Navy. The pirates don't exactly have a warship. Sure, they can do some damage with RPG's and the like, but any major Navy has the ability to launch a 10 ton shell 10 miles away and nail a gnat's testicles.
No, the problem is that they do have big ships, they hijack ships and the like, they do have warships, the reason there still out there is because the ocean is vast and makes up 75% of the planet, and that these pirates often hang out in the poorer area's.
Now let's say a coalition of countries against the Western Powers is formed, they now have a haven and can become privateers.
Its also because we're not firing into a enemy which is right in front of us, there are also allied countries there hiding behind, and at sea its easier to elude coast guards.
