The shooting happened earlier today in the morning, pacific time. Suspect is said to have started shooting near the security check point and then pushed into the gates. He was taken down by police, after which he was taken to the hospital. One TSA agent is said to have died- though the Department of Transportation tweet that released this was later deleted- with a further seven injuries.

Wow, only single digits? He must really suck at shooting, or have picked a bad time of day or something. From the map there it looks like he walked into the building and just opened up.

Wonder whether this is a random nutter or someone the TSA's molested before.

Oh, there were thousands of people around, LAX is the sixth busiest airport in the entire world. But, I've been reading that it seemed like he was only targeting the TSA and possessed "anti-government literature." So, naturally he is being painted as a deranged right-winger. Although in this case, he very well might be.

That.

The timing and location for beginning a rampage is as important as having a good practice and confidence in your weapon. Shooting in the galleries, halls and corridors results in far greater casualties than pulling the trigger in a courtyard. This fellow was probably stopped at the security checking point and discovered he cannot take his weapon further inside, persuading him to pull it out at the spot and begin shooting, instead of the better option of handing it over this time, stepping in unarmed, studying the location and security measures, smuggling his weapon more cleverly next time and doing it with perseverance and planning.

Not that I am a professional terrorist, but when a man does anything, he should do it in the right way.

I feel like not being allowed to bring guns to the airport, especially past "security" screening, is a pretty well-known rule. I also feel like they wouldn't just let you hand it over and send you on your merry way.

Sounds like the guy came to shoot Transportation Security Administration agents and security screening is the perfect place to do because that is where they are.

Reports say he asked people if they were TSA agents. With only 1 killed and 2 wounded, all TSA officers this was politically motivated. I am surprised that a mass shooting or bombing has yet to occur at a security checkpoint in the US. Given the location and the amount of ammo the gunman had on him this could have easily been another mass shooting. I can see this being used as an excuse to militarize large airports in the US.

Good news is gas is not getting too much more expensive and there are plenty of fuel efficient cars that are great for long highway trips. Flying is a big enough hassle as it, I don't want to go through a military checkpoint to fly.

I think in this case its probably a broader one, a lot of news stations went kind of overboard (IMO) with criticisms of the TSA. There are legitimate things about privacy and liberty (even differences in how they treat certain passengers) with these kinds of programs but always going for knee jerk accusations of it being one step away from a police state or 1984 (or some other dystopian inspiration) probably inspired a different kind of outrage from people. Seeing as this guy seems to have had employment problems along with some personal life dysfunction it would make him more prone into thinking he had to stand up against some perceived injustice.

I'm surprised something like this didn't happen sooner, seeing how vitriolic TSA perceptions got a few years ago when that whole full-body scanner thing got introduced. I think it was roughly around that time TSA criticisms really took root since you could get the attention of more Americans if you transformed the issue from a vague civil liberties issue to one implying TSA would now attract pervs, if they didn't already have them, to gawk at your body.

The kind of conspiratorial mindset this feeds is already creating the usual reactions we've seen, with most jumping on a training exercise airport police practiced a few days prior for a similar scenario, and then stating that this event was in fact yet another false-flag for the government to justify their continued beefing up of the police and military.

The shooter, Paul Ciancia, is still in an area hospital and is said to be unresponsive. Authorities have been piecing together his background and items he had on himself that show he had an axe to grind against what he saw as a police state. Different media report he had frequent references to himself as a "patriot, a police state, dangers of fiat currency, one world order, and other nonsense.

All things considered this could have been far worse. Even though he was apparently just singling out TSA agents in a crowded area and with the amount of ammunition he had, he didn't get much done before he got taken down. It seems that those he wounded are going to pull through, so the only casualty will be the agent he murdered.

He is currently subject to two felonies, one for the murder of the TSA agent and another for violence in the airport.
