Okay, so I've been wondering something for a while. Maybe some of you can help me figure this out...

When do men die younger than women?

Life Expectancy---average years:

............................Men....Women Japan...................76.2...82.5 France..................72.9...81.3 Switzerland...........74.1...81.3 Netherlands...........73.7...80.5 Sweden................74.2...80.4 Canada.................73.4...80.3 Norway.................73.1...79.7 Germany...............72.6...79.2 Finland..................70.7...78.8 United States.........71.7...78.5 United Kingdom......72.7...78.2 Denmark................72.2...77.9

I've heard it explained away that it's "genetic," but that doesn't make much sense...a hundred years ago, in the States for example, it was roughly the same. Using the US as an example, here's the figures from 2003 going back to 1920...

.......................USA .......................Men....Women 2003................74.8....80.1 2002................74.5....79.9 2001................74.4....79.8 2000................74.3....79.7 1999................73.9....79.4 1998................73.8....79.5 1997................73.6....79.4 1996................73.1....79.1 1995................72.5....78.9 1990................71.8....78.8 1985................71.1....78.2 1980................70.0....77.4 1975................68.8....76.6 1970................67.1....74.7 1965................66.8....73.8 1960................66.6....73.1 1955................66.7....72.8 1950................65.6....71.1 1945................63.6....67.9 1940................60.8....65.2 1935................59.9....63.9 1930................58.1....61.6 1925................57.6....60.6 1920................53.6....54.6

Any clues?

Cheers. :smokin:

It’s something having to do with the hormone changes they get from giving birth. I’ve heard it said before that having a baby in a woman's later years increases her life expectancy by 20 years.

Really? However it'd decrease the chance of giving birth to a healthy baby.

I doubt it's that.

That's roughly what I think, as well.

I won't go into the scientific explanation so no genetics or hormones, as I don't know enough about these to succesfully debate this.

So, what is the difference between men and women, if you discard the genetics? I ended up, as well as Czech did, as the difference in life-styles. I think some men (not trying to generalize here), have a more stressfull life than some other women. We might see the answer to this in, let's say, ten years. As more and more women get more demanding work, their lives will become more stressfull. And, if we see an decrease in the difference between life expectancies, we might have discovered one of the factor that influences this difference.

How can that be? I wouldve thought that it would be reduced by giving birth a little late in her life...

Stress ages people immensely.

You provide the guess, I provide the science;)

That makes no sense. Women have more fat on them(in places we like to look at:p). They have more fat, but they are living longer.
