"It is mystifying that we should roll out the red carpet to a person who has incited violence against civilians and who has expressed incendiary rhetoric against the United States and our allies," said Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

has Khatami ever said such things?I thought he always talked about "dialogue among civilizations".:uhm:

Their leaders might not be all that, but its unfair to roast Iran as a whole, its a fine country, really.

Since when has civilization and tourism been linked? Persia is one of the oldest civilizations around, they lived in cities, used alphabeth, used wheels and had writen laws about two and half thousands of years before your scandinavian ancestors even figured out these things, mostly by pillaging Europe.

Not to mention that these inventions/ideas passed to the Greeks who passed them for the rest of Europe: our civilization is partially, even if distantly, created by high cultures of Middle East. Some people should take some history lessons.

It doesn't. Did you even bother to read what I wrote and what he wrote?

Becasue if you would had read it, you wouldn't made that post. Since you would clearly see that I was talking about civilization, or lack of it. And he saidm that Iran was a beautiful country and not to drag them all over the same edge. And I responded that I didn't know they had a tourist industy there since he's apperantly been there.

Jeez!

And no, I don't think they are a cilvilization by our standards anymore. Sure they have been, long time ago, when Europe wasn't. But that's a WHOLE different topic.

Ok..

Dictionary.com, about Civilization : "1. An advanced state of intellectual, cultural, and material development in human society, marked by progress in the arts and sciences, the extensive use of record-keeping, including writing, and the appearance of complex political and social institutions."

Last I heard, Iran had complex political and social institutions (very complex actually), keeps records, has literacy of 80%, it has a vibrant culture, has universities and is ultimately building a nuclear reactor, and has poets, intellectuals and scientists, living in Iran itself or abroad.
