U.S. government medical researchers intentionally infected hundreds of people in Guatemala, including institutionalized mental patients, with gonorrhea and syphilis without their knowledge or permission more than 60 years ago. Many of those infected were encouraged to pass the infection onto others as part of the study. About one third of those who were infected never got adequate treatment.
The STD experiments were conducted with the cooperation of the Guatemalan government. During that time, the U.S. -- which had a long association with the Guatemalan military -- exerted a powerful influence in the Latin American country, largely in order to protect the interests of the American-based United Fruit Company. In 1954 the U.S. CIA helped overthrow Guatemala’s democratically elected president because of land reforms that opposed the multinational corporation.

What most surprises me is that the were already doing this sort of thing at Tuskegee, why were they testing this in Guatemala as well?

Which is a good question. Maybe they wanted to know if syphilis had different effects on brown people, as opposed to black people. :wtf:

I love the US. I wonder what else we have done to unsuspecting island populations.

Apparently they used prisoners and prostitutes... two groups that nobody cares about.

Not unlike the Japanese using POWs as guinea pigs in their own experiments.

I wonder what medical experiments we are conducting now that we will apologize for in 60 years.

Hopefully Miley Cyrus cloning :naughty:

I read about this like 6 months ago, kind of embarrassing actually. I wonder what results they came up with.

Guatemala isn't an island.

Prison populations were traditionally used in the US for experiments because they were a captive population.
