Mom, grandma charged in voodoo burning - 6/18/09 - New York News and Tri-State News - 7online.com

A mother and grandmother were charged Thursday with participating in a voodoo ritual that left a 6-year-old girl with burns over 25 percent of her body.

I wonder if these people will ever wake up one day and think "My god, how could I have possibly believed in this crap?"

This reminds me of the discussion on gay marriage, where I noted that religions are still required to obey the laws of the US. This is a perfect example...doesn't matter that this was part of your beliefs, you still set a 6 year old on fire.

...Which is why freedom of religion and government can't coexist. If people were allowed freedom of religion anyone could make up a religion to justifie anything they do.

Freedom of religion merely means freedom to believe what you wish. It is not the freedom to practice those beliefs. The practice of your beliefs has to fall within the confines of the law.

I consider my self superstitious, but I'm definitely not going to light my daughter on fire for some stupid reason. I was under the impression that superstition was supposed to keep people safe, albeit from forces that may not exist; not injure them permanently.

I always thought voodoo was about pinching dolls and warding off zombies, not setting your own child on fire. That's just horrible.

Do a little research.

I can think of some dead baby jokes but I think I'll hold off on it...
